CRETE, Neb. — The nightmare began with an explosion of glass as a gunman fired a shot through the lunchroom door of the Americold Logistics plant.

When it was over, three people had been wounded — one of them with 11 gunshot wounds. The gunman, an Americold worker, was dead of a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

What was not clear was why the man opened fire.

Doctors said Elizabeth Canas, 40, of Crete suffered 11 gunshot wounds and underwent eight hours of surgery.

Canas was in critical condition Thursday at BryanLGH Medical Center West in Lincoln but was expected to survive. Two others were treated for their injuries and released.

The gunman was identified by police as Akouch B. Kashoual, 26, of Lincoln. His body was found outside the plant in a parking lot.

Felix Carranza of Crete is a forklift driver who was among the second-shift workers taking their lunch break at 9:45 p.m. Wednesday. He said at first he didn't know what was happening as the shattering glass flew over his head.
