Americans like to work--and they are unhappy when they can't, as shown with the unrest over the current 9 percent-plus unemployment.

The habits of work are deeply ingrained in our national DNA, as this Labor Day reflection by the U.S. Census Bureau shows:

• In a nation of 310 million people, about 154.4 million of us 16 or older are in the work force. There are 7.6 million who hold more than one job, and 284,000 work two full-time jobs.

• There are 10.1 million who work for themselves. A total of 5.9 million Americans work at home.

• More than a quarter -- 27 percent -- work longer than 40 hours a week, and 7percent work 60 or more hours a week.

• Americans receive a median annual income of $46,367 for men and $35,745 for women.
