400 UK Group home support staff set to return

Two more groups of striking support workers who care for developmentally disabled adults are returning to work this week.

Nearly 400 workers employed by Community Living associations in Chatham-Kent and Middlesex County voted to ratify agreements on Sunday and will be back to work by Thursday.

The associations dropped a demand to discipline workers for inappropriate picket line behaviour, helping to end the eight-week strike.

The contracts contain an increase in wages and pensions, and improvements in money employees receive for mileage, said Denise Sands, president of Local 144 of the Ontario Public Service Employees Union (OPSEU), representing London and Middlesex County.

In 2007, workers will receive a wage increase of $1.40, and 60-cent increases for the next two years, she said.

The contract is similar to contracts for group home workers in Elgin County and Tillsonburg and expires on March 31, 2010.
