EBENSBURG — The National Labor Relations Board has found merit in grievances filed by two unions against Grane Healthcare, which took over Laurel Crest on Jan. 1.

The decision means the NLRB will haul Pittsburgh-based Grane before an administrative law judge on July 21, pushing for the unions to be made whole through money payments and rehirings.

Grane has refused to concede the case and come to terms with the unions in the days since Robert W. Chester, director of the NLRB’s Region Six in Pittsburgh, made his July 1 ruling.

“I think that we have a strong case; their attorneys have told me that they believe they have a strong case,” Chester said Tuesday.

The matter still can be settled out of court but – as of Tuesday – the 10 a.m. July 21 hearing at the Cambria County Courthouse is on.

Grane refused to recognize the Service Employees International Union or the Laborers International Union of North America from the second it took over the county nursing home and renamed it the Cambria Care Center.
