Dresser-Rand workers strike
No date set for talks to resume; health care costs among sticking points.

Lengthy talks between Dresser-Rand and Local 313 IUE-CWA broke down after 2 a.m. Saturday when heated words, including a profanity from a company negotiator, sent union officials away from the table and to the picket lines.

Louis DiLorenzo, Dresser-Rand's chief spokesman, admitted to uttering the offensive statement that challenged the union to strike over such a "rich" union contract.

"It was a poor choice of words," DiLorenzo said. "It was not in anger, but in frustration after 11 straight hours of bargaining.

"I didn't believe that they would take that kind of a gamble with this kind of an offer."

Picket captain Brian Preston was offended by the turn negotiations took Saturday morning.

"It shows you their professionalism," he said.
