MASHANTUCKET, Conn.

A United Auto Workers local said Tuesday it has reached agreement with Foxwoods Resort Casino on a contract that will increase wages and establish a fairer distribution of tips for 2,500 casino dealers.

If approved, the union said its first contract with the Indian-run casino will raise dealers' wages by 12 percent over two years. Foxwoods dealers currently earn an average of about $35,000 a year in wages and tips, the union said.

The contract would establish job-safety measures, such as programs to reduce repetitive stress injuries, an extension of medical leave for workers with serious illnesses and a smoke-free work area, the union said.

Representatives of Foxwoods did not immediately return messages left by The Associated Press.

A ratification vote by dealers is scheduled for Friday.
