Wal Mart does it again, this time in Canada (Update)

Wal Mart does it again. The Supreme Court of Canada has ruled in favor of the chain store. In 2005, the store in Jonquiree, Quebec was closed because of the recent union certification of the stores employees. This, of course, led to various court runs by the displaced employees of the store. At the end of 2005, the Quebec Labor Board ordered Wal Mart to compensate the former employees. (http://wakeupwalmart.com/facts/) Friday, the Supreme Court of Canada has seen fit to rule 4-3 in favor of the company. As usual, the company had said that the store was closed due to nonprofitability at the store. The vice president of Walmart Canada said, “As of now, the highest court in the land has looked at this, as have other courts, and have said that as unfortunate as the situation was, Wal-Mart was not in the wrong to do what it did.” (http://www.cbc.ca/canada/story/2009/11/27/supreme-court-walmart-union.html)

But looking at Wal Mart's track record of unionized workers tells another story. They left operations in Germany because of the regulations governing business and union. In Texas, a store's meat department unionized. (http://multinationalmonitor.org/editorsblog/index.php?/archives/36-Wal-Mart-refuses-to-accept-unions,-regulations,-leaves-Germany.html) The result was the termination of meat cutters from all stores. (http://wakeupwalmart.com/facts/) The National Labor Relations Board ruled that Wal Mart was in the wrong. Wal Mart has an appeal in progress. In England, where Wal Mart joined with ASDA , the union threatened a strike. Wal Mart's response was to try and bring in strike breakers. (http://www.walmartwatch.com/battlemart/archives/london_uk_wal_mart_workers_threaten_strike_in_england/ ) Some of Wal Mart's tactics include the spying on of union sympathetic employees, freezing wages, replacement workers, etc. Their opinion of unionization is stated on their webpage. “Walmart's Position on Unions (For U.S. Operations Only) It’s all about taking care of our people. If we do that and do what is right for our communities, we will be fine. We will continue to foster an environment of open communications and encourage our associates to express their ideas, comments and concerns. We are not against unions. They may be right for some companies but there is simply no need for a third party to come between our associates and their managers”. (http://walmartstores.com/FactsNews/7656.aspx)

Can't believe they don't mention that the largest recipients of Medicaid in most states are Walmart employees. You'd think they'd mention that, huh?

2. That is one way to drive out Wally Mart from your town. Go union.
Small businesses are probably rejoicing right now.
