FREMONT -- As 4,500 auto workers prepare to lose their jobs at the NUMMI plant in Fremont, the federal government is lending a helping hand. The Labor Department has announced that when NUMMI shuts its doors in April, displaced workers will be eligible for up to three years of unemployment assistance.

The 20,000 people in the factory's supply chain, who will also lose their jobs, are not eligible for the benefits.

Two rapid response coordinators from the state employment department are counseling workers on education and re-training options.
