SPEEA union chief sacked

The head of the union that represents about 20,000 Boeing engineers and technical workers in the Puget Sound area has been sacked.

Charles Bofferding, longtime executive director of the Society of Professional Engineering Employees in Aerospace, or SPEEA, was dismissed by the board late Tuesday.
The move comes after Boeing workers in Wichita last month voted to decertify their unit of the Seattle-based union.

A person close to the matter said Bofferding's removal was related to what happened in Wichita.
The board name SPEEA spokesman Bill Dugovich to the interim position of chief of staff.

Dugovich would not discuss why Bofferding was dismissed. He said the board voted to "discontinue'' Bofferding's contract, which did not have an expiration date. The board's settlement with Bofferding included a severance package.
