SHIAWASSEE COUNTY - The drivers who work for the Shiawassee Area Transportation Agency are now represented by the Teamsters Local 580.
A secret ballot took place at the SATA facilities from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Thursday, where a total of 30 eligible workers had an opportunity to vote.
The ending tally was 23-5 in favor of receiving union representation.
SATA attorney Aaron Graves explained that, apart from the voters, only three people were in the room when an employee was casting their vote - one Michigan Employment Relations Commission representative, one SATA representative and one Teamster representative.
“Basically, the only thing those people do is make sure nobody from off the street comes in to vote,” Graves said.
Executive Director Larry Alpert said he did not feel strongly either way concerning the voting's end result.
