Hy-Vee cited for labor law violations
BY JOHN KEENAN
WORLD-HERALD STAFF WRITER

Employees younger than 18 who disassembled a meat slicer and operated a compactor were part of the reason the U.S. Department of Labor assessed Hy-Vee Inc., $32,670 in civil penalties.

The department's wage and hour division investigation found multiple child labor violations at four of the company’s Nebraska stores. Most dealt with teens working too many hours, according to a press release from the agency's district office in Des Moines.

Hours violations were found at stores at 9707 Q. St. and 17810 Welch Plaza in Omaha, 11650 S. 73rd St. in Papillion, and 2107 Taylor Ave. in Norfolk.

There also were six violations of the Labor Department’s hazardous orders regulations, all involving employees at the Papillion store.

Hy-Vee has taken action to ensure future compliance and paid the penalties, according to the release.

1. The only company being investigated by the Bush Dept of Labor is employee owned.
Figures.

3. They have great grocery stores
I was in their store in Osage Beach, Missouri last year and have never been so impressed by a store. The employees were friendly and helpful, the store was well stocked, extrememly clean, and everything we bought in the deli area was excellent.

I wish there were Hy-vee stores where I live.
