UMW construction workers ratify contract

CHARLESTON, W.Va. - Members of the United Mine Workers have approved a new three-year labor agreement with companies that dig mine shafts and handle other construction projects for underground and surface coal mines, the union said Wednesday.

The deal with the Association of Bituminous Contractors covers about 2,000 construction workers and another 1,000 retirees in West Virginia, Pennsylvania, Alabama, Ohio, Kentucky, Utah, Illinois and Indiana, the union said.

Top-scale workers will get a 15.7 percent raise over the life of the contract, which also increases pension benefits and keeps retiree health care benefits and insurance deductibles for active workers unchanged.

A representative of the Association of Bituminous Contractors did not immediately return a telephone call Wednesday.
