Associated Press - December 14, 2008 3:35 PM ET

OMAHA, Neb. (AP) - Union Pacific has again been named 1 of the nation's 50 most military friendly employers.

G.I. Jobs career guide has included the Omaha-based railroad on its military friendly list in 5 of the last six years.

G.I. Jobs bases its rankings on how much of an effort a company makes to hire and train veterans, what percentage of its new hires are veterans and how accommodating it is to national guard members.

G.I. Jobs says the railroad lifestyle and working conditions are similar to the military because much of the work is outdoors and can involve odd hours.

UP also actively seeks to hire veterans by participating in military job fairs and other outreach efforts.
