I'm not going to browbeat any of you, I just think that when you start with your 'holier than thou' shit, think about those of us who struggle here to make YOU the membership of DU, AWARE of Union and anti-Union activities, and situations that AFFECT YOU directly everyday.

3. I have been a Liberal/Progressive/Union member ALL of my adult life

Very early on I was registered as an Independent, but since 1976, I ave been a Democrat. My first Union membership was in my first job at the A&P stocking shelves and pushing carriages (Grocery Workers Union 1966). I have belonged to the Teamsters, SEIU, and UAW, PROUDLY, and even though some of my Union reps were assholes or corrupt, I always had a better work environment in a UNION shop, period.

I've been a member of the UAW-affiliated National Writers Union and the Newspaper Guild, and my partner was a union carpenter and is now a UTU conductor. We are Union Proud.

Do you mean Web pages? I've seen some good ones -- what unions need to do a better job of online is SEO. And especially in the building trades. It shouldn't be as hard as it is sometimes to find a union plumber or home builder if I want one.

8. Part of it is my fault, I've had to let things slow down for now

I've been away from the Forum, except for 2-3 posts a day for a few weeks now. I'm in study mode for an EPA test I have to pass for work for my promotion. Once I pass, I'll be my old self. I'm scheduled to take it on the 30th of Oct. I won't know until about 3 weeks later. I have to pass is by the end of January, or go back to my old lower classification.

I've never had benefits, never had health care. I've spent 30 years in the hotel/restaurant business. I've had more jobs than I can remember. I do not wear the label of a progressive, so perhaps I can be excused from not visiting the forum?

You are correct. The labor union movement, so important to America as we know it, is just not in the forefront of the minds of most progressives any more. They have forgotten that things like minimum wage, unemployment insurance, social security, pensions, workers' comp, sick days, overtime, etc. we owe to the union movement.

And, oh yeah, pretty much no Dem would be elected without the free labor provided by union members.

However, wouldn't this rant be more effective if posted in GD or some other forum? I mean, if your complaint is that not enough DUers come here, how will they ever get a chance to consider your point?

... but I was young and stupid. Ended up quitting the best job I ever had, working on the dock at Roadway Express.

Anyway, I'm kind of new here and was thinking the very same thing as "Dain". It was disappointing to see such a lack of interest in issues that affect so many of us. If we don't start organizing and fighting back, the big corporations will have us all working part time jobs through temp agencies for $7/hr with no health insurance.
