In March 1955, high school graduate Bill Burga went to work in the Timken Roller Bearing plant in Canton, launching a 52-year career of union work.
"I could see very early that workers needed a union," said Burga, 70, just before he retired last week as president of the Ohio AFL-CIO. "It wasn't just about negotiations for decent wages and benefits, but day-to-day representation."
Representing workers became a life calling for Burga.

STILL A FIRE
First named to head the AFL-CIO in October 1993, Burga leaves as the longest serving president in the organization's history.
He may have grown a bit more mellow. Well, maybe.
