Justice@Smithfield Ad Campaign Launched

This summer the metro and bus systems of the greater Washington, DC area will tell the powerful stories of workers from Smithfield's Tar Heel, North Carolina plant. Highlighting injuries, neglect and past instances of racial discrimination, the ads will ask D.C. area consumers to make a humane choice when they shop, and avoid Smithfield products.

The transportation ads are part of a larger campaign spotlighting the historic ties between the nation’s capital and the communities of North Carolina, which will also feature radio spots, television commercials, yard signs, and even voice messages recorded by Hollywood star Danny Glover, all under the tag line, "Until Smithfield Does Better By Us, We Can Buy Better Than Smithfield."

Thousands of DC-area families have relatives in North Carolina. Many migrated to the capital in years past for better work opportunities and—at times—to escape abusive working conditions like those at Smithfield’s Tar Heel plant. The campaign, organized by a coalition of DC area clergy, labor activists and family members in conjunction with Justice@Smithfield, argues that there should not be two sets of health and safety standards in the meat packing industry—one for the North and one for the South.

Local support for the campaign has been striking. A roll out event last Thursday included members of the Washington, DC City Council, representatives from the Prince George's County (Maryland) Council, and a member of the Maryland State Senate, along with a dozen faith leaders representing a number of the capital-area's diverse religious heritage. The DC councilmembers announced their intent to introduce a resolution in support of the workers at the Tar Heel plant, and PG County Councilman Eric Olson highlighted a similar resolution that was unanimously passed last fall.
