The Communications Workers of America will open its 70th annual convention in Las Vegas on Monday, June 23, at 9 a.m. All sessions of the three-day convention will be held at the Las Vegas Hilton Hotel.

Delegates will focus on Labor 2008, CWA's political and mobilization program to elect a president and members of Congress who will support workers' critical issues, specifically real health care reform, jobs and fair trade, retirement security and the Employee Free Choice Act which will restore the middle class and collective bargaining rights for workers.

The 3,500 delegates and guests also will hear from Senator Barack Obama (by satellite) and will take up a resolution to endorse his candidacy for President of the United States. As a super delegate, CWA President Larry Cohen endorsed Obama in May.

President Cohen will speak on Monday, at about 9 a.m. Other speakers include UAW President Ron Gettelfinger; Francisco Hernandez-Juarez, president of the independent telephone workers union in Mexico, and Philip Jennings, general secretary of UNI Global Union, the worldwide labor organization.

CWA is the union for the Information Age, representing 700,000 workers in communications, media, airlines, manufacturing and public service.

CONTACT: Jeff Miller or Candice Johnson, CWA Media Center at Las Vegas Hilton, starting Monday am at +1-702-892-3027, +1-202-415-6566 (cell) anytime, both of CWA Communications
