Republican congress critter sends letter with profanity in it!!!!!!
Emerson puzzled how obscenity appeared in letter to constituent
SAM HANANEL
Associated Press
WASHINGTON - Nobody expects to get a letter from a member of Congress that ends with an expletive.

But that's what happened when Rep. Jo Ann Emerson, R-Mo., recently corresponded with a resident of her southeast Missouri district. The letter ended with a profane, seven-letter insult beginning with the letter a - "i think you're an ..."

Emerson says she can't explain how the offensive language made it into the last line of the letter, which otherwise reads like a typical response to a citizen's question about last year's testimony of oil executives before the Senate Commerce Committee.

"There is no excuse for this inappropriate letter having been sent, and every apology has been made to the individual who received it," Emerson said in a written statement to The Associated Press.

I wonder how that happened? I didn't know that asshole was a "profane" word. A bit dirty maybe, but not profane. This sounds similar to the story about the prescriptions with insults included in the information and patient instructions.

5. I downloaded and examined the pdf of this letter.
I think this is a farce. The last sentence does not fit, especially since it does not have appropriate capitalization. Much as I'd like to castigate rethug criminals, this has gotten way too much attention for all its transparency.
I call bullshit.

February 15, 2006

Mr. Bill Jones
(street address redacted)
Centerville, MO 63633-0088

Dear Mr. Jones:

Thank you for contacting me regarding the testimony of oil company executives before the Senate Committee on Commerce. I appreciate the time you have taken to share your concerns with me.

On November 9, 2005, several executives from ConocoPhillips and ExxonMobil testified before the Senate Committee on Commerce. The executives were asked several questions pertaining to the industry's record profits and allegations of price gouging. Unfortunately, the executives were never placed under oath and therefore all statements made in front of the committee are not subject to penalty of law. In recent months, the record profits achieved by the major oil companies have come to my attention. Honest testimony is needed to explain the gains received over the last six months. Measures need to be taken to investigate and prosecute price gouging by the major oil companies. With gas prices being so volatile, manipulation of the market will not be tolerated.

In the United States, we are blessed with abundant natural resources yet remain at the mercy of an international cartel. Our dependence on foreign oil threatens our economy and our way of life. Our national security depends on secure and stable supplies of energy. In particular, alternative fuels are important in Missouri, where the corn and soybean our farmers produce can be made into viable fuel additives, reducing the amount of oil needed to produce a gallon of gas. America's energy future depends upon the proper management of natural resources and energy infrastructure.

Once again, thank you for contacting me regarding the testimony of oil company executives before the Senate Commerce Committee. Please feel free to contact me with other mattes that are of importance to you. I am honored to serve as your Representative in the U.S. Congress. i think you're an asshole.

Sincerely,
/s/
JO ANN EMERSON
Member of Congress

Hand written note: Please forgive the delay in responding.

12. that is too funny!
Betcha it was some staffer's kid who saw the letter on a computer screen as it was being written (or, since it's presumably a form letter, being personalized to add Bill Jones' address) and decided to goof around.

I'm laughing because it's not my kid... otherwise, how mortifying.

13. Woe to one of my kids if he had done something like that
I don't care if the writer was asking for a commemoration stamp for the Ku Klux Klan. That is not what a Congressman wants in his correspondence to his constituents.

Ms. Emerson must really be embarrassed because the letter crossed her desk like that and she missed. That would be an easy thing to miss if she had just been signing papers. Nevertheless, she is responsible and somebody's head might roll over this.

10. I think a staffer did it
She seems rather decent from what I've heard about her. She's one of the very few right-wingers I like.

14. Why in the world would a staffer flip off a senator while he is speaking?
Why in the world would the putative Vice President tell a Senator to have carnal relations with himself?

15. They handle the letters
And I'm sure a member of Congress isn't dumb enough to put that in a letter. I think it was someone working for her.
