Why do people-when around family- whisper when they are saying
racist shit? This happened during Easter of all times at my mom's house. Much of my family, not me, is ultra conservative, fake Catholic religious. They were talking about the different situations and I was in the next room watching the Met game with my girlfriend and my cousins. As soon as the slurring began "those blacks", "what dont "they" understand about the word "illegal"-in reference to the illegal immigrants, they even slandered Cindy Sheehan. Anyway, maybe it was because I was there, and I rip there asses, but they seemed to lower there voices when saying this. My cousin, who is 17, at one point said, "Why are they whispering? We know what they are saying."

Very odd, that they feel they can speak freely as long as they do it quietly. Interesting.

1. because they KNOW they are saying vile mistruths
and they realize if they say them loud enough for everyone to hear, someone is gonna call them out on it.

4. THANK YOU. It's proof they know they should be ashamed of themselves.

2. They're trying to hide their true thoughts....
As crazy as that sounds. I have a saying, "if you have to hide something, you have no business doing it". Your relatives know what they're saying and modelling is wrong, that's why they whisper.

3. along a similar line...
had a story told to me by a family member that involved someone of 'ethnicity' that just had a bad day and fucked up ( o my, don't we all) and caused some stress for this family member of mine. Of course, the adjective was " ", fill in whatever 'ethnic' you like.

Noted was if it was a white guy that screwed up, there would not have been a description/adjective/ethnic/gender thing attached to the story.

5. If they are so proud of their beliefs, why aren't they speaking up?
 Typical rethugs.

6. My daughter-in-law's boyfriend (living together)
tried to tell me & hubby a gay joke on Sunday. We were outside smoking (don't smoke in the house) and he stopped very, very quickly when we gave him "the look".

If necessary, I walk away.

If they start it with me, I tell them I don't appreciate that kind of sad humor.

They whisper because they are, underneath it all, ashamed.

They really don't want to get my backdraft by sending me racist, sexist or homophobic emails, either.

7. I'm sure glad I don't have your situation.
Everyone in my family are Catholic and democrats and have the same political beliefs as I, except for one niece who is pentecostal and republican and you know what she believes.
