2. It would be nice not to have to see so many posts in GD
It's an important issue, but the politics of it are not something that interests me. rape = bad = jail if found guilty - what more needs to be said? Don't rape people.

3. No! It is NOT a national crisis.
Not important in the grand scheme of American lives.

4. erm, rape is important in the grand scheme of things.
not saying a dedicated thread should be make, just pointing out the fact that rape affects many many people and should be addressed appropriately and considered important.

10. Rape is a terrible crime that violates an individual.
The case being discussed 24/7 does not involve this entire nation and is not a personal crisis for all of us.

If I were the victim or the perps I would prefer that the case be handled in court and not by the over paid talking heads on cable.

11. the nation is filled with personal crises regarding rape.
I accept that one particular case should not overtake such as it has, but would like to see an honest report on rape in general and how prevelant it is and how still misunderstood it is.

but that would be serious journalism. can't have that now, can we?

5. The planet and and its flora/fauna (us) are being raped. The Duke thing
isn't news....it's a distraction. A mere blink of the eye in the grand scheme of the universe. Faux News has an on going interest, watch there if you're obsessed by such things.

6. It Will Not Happen, My Friend
Eventually people will grow bored with the matter; there will be no new developments in it; fresh occassions for outrage will iccur in other directions....

"On the whole, I'd rather be in Philadelphia."

12. The media has trained Americans to react like Pavlovian dogs
Edited on Wed Apr-19-06 05:23 PM by Vinnie From Indy
to whatever sordid or bloody bit of news is selected to keep them distracted. The people that call the shots at major American media outlets wave a bit blood or sex and Americans move their head just like a dog will when a bone is moved to and fro in front of it's face. That's a good doggie! Look at the stick! Look at the stick! Go get it, good boy! If half of the energy used by folks that spend hours and hours discussing the minute details of this crime were directed into their local communities to support rape victims and battered women, think of what could be accomplished. Why a rape in North Carolina is more important than one that happened in your city or town on the same day escapes me.

I vote for a forum for these stories. I would title it "Distraction DuJour".
