Armbands for Resistance
Edited on Tue Apr-18-06 08:16 PM by KyndCulture
I was listening to Randi this afternoon and she had a good idea for solidarity. So I made a few calls tonight, since I am in the printing business and have found some prices and gotten together with a few folks to start a movement called -

Armbands for Resistance. Basically they are satin ribbon velcro armbands about 3 inches thick, they are black and they will say your choice of "Resist War" or "No More War" in silver bold print. They are meant to be worn everyday. A silent ongoing vigil. I think we could grow this concept.

Do you guys think this is a good idea. Would you support this peaceful everyday protest movement? We could easily overshadow the meaningless yellow magnets.

The armbands will be around 5.00 I think and I will donate a part of the proceeds to a Paralyzed Vets of America.

So what ya think? Feedback? Am I nuts? Is this a good idea? Is black the right color?

I can get he satin ones quickly then work on getting elastic fabric ones in about 6 weeks. I'm just feeling for some support for this project. I know we could get Randi in on promoting it.

1. Sounds good. We definately need a show of solidarity. Black sounds
good, as in "Wearing Black for a Funeral".

7. I thought that if they said Stop War or No More War
you might get a conversation going with someone, if they are plain they might feel it's an intrusion to ask you about it.

20. I agree. Less is absolutely more in this case. And for it to be a truly
grassroots thing, it has to be something that anyone can make for himself or herself, for free.

It's nice of the OP to think of this as a device for raising money for a charity, but it'll never spread as an idea unless it spreads as an idea, not as a product. Remember that phrase, please.

You can get that any any dollar store and a silver pen! Or if you don't have a creative bone in your body you can buy one!

Keep it simple. That was Randi's idea and mine. I just have the connections to help is all.

I'd prefer just a simple monochromatic black armband

8. Might I suggest wrist-thingies? Like were all the rage for breast cancer?
Not tryin to minimize it - just sayin: a little less "intrusive on fashion" might get a bigger/more receptive participant base.

It worked smashingly for breast cancer - damn near everyone had em, and everyone knew what they were for...

13. Yeah but now they sell them at he dollar store in every color.
I want something reminiscent of the resistance in WW2 or the Vets with the black arm bands like Kerry. I want them to be obtrusive, know what i mean?

15. I just worry that if they're that obstrusive, they won't have mass appeal
And I don't think the they-sell-em-in-every-color thing is that big a deal - that was true during the breast cancer wristband thing, and it was perfectly clear in that case wasn't it? I thought the statement in the breast cancer case was quite loud & clear...

I'm just trying to fine-tune the idea so as to be as easy and attractive to the largest number of people...

16. Why not do both? My supplier sells those things too.
I'll check it out. I know I can get the ribbons fast they do those in house.

If they carry the same message... Then we are still showing solidarity. And some of us are just more in your face - like me! and some of us are more quiet.

As long as they are short sayings. I get two lines of text per ribbon.

22. How about "Had Enough Yet?" ?
I can't remember which DUer suggested this a few weeks ago,
but it really resonated with my apolitical husband when he heard it.
It taps into the readers' "last straw", no matter what that straw happens to be. :)

know, maybe red with a design on it. Maybe a design like, what, a SWASTIKA? I think we should make these for them. I'd chip in.

28. I'd start wearing a black armband tomorrow, except that I always wear
a black jacket. Wait a minute, the armband fabric would stand out a little bit from the jacket material, wouldn't it?

I'm going to do it (but just a plain one with no graphics or text). I'll sew the son of a bitch to the jacket sleeve to make sure I never forget to put it on.

And I'll not be shy about explaining it if people ask.

Anyone else?

29. Stop by any party store or dollar store and get a silver paint pen
and put a peace sign on it.. that would stand out. or something as simple as NO NUKES.

Thanks for encouraging me, redstone. I have been so down in the dumps this week. I need to do something. The Iran thing has me in knots.

I'm best at organizing things... so that's what I'll do.

30. Plain works better for me for a number of reasons. One is that I dress
formally (suit, tie) for business even when my customers go casual. I do it on purpose, and it works...will explain why some other time.

I'm glad to have been able to offer you encouragement. As I said, doing something is always better than doing nothing, and you have the best of intentions, and I respect you for doing whatever you think will help.

And I beleive that this Iran thing has MANY of us "in knots." Even though I think it's just a smokescreen to distract us from other stuff, it does generate some worry, doesn't it?

Hang in there.

35. Come and get your armbands!!
A few of Randi's listeners got together and ordered black fabric armbands with with words "NO WAR" stitched in white on them. They are 5.00 each including shipping. Let's get this movement going.

If you don't want to buy one make your own! Let's do this.
