Molly Ivins OUT of Impeachment Closet ! :)

AUSTIN, Texas -- The first time as tragedy, the second time as farce. Thirty-five years ago, Richard Milhous Nixon, who was crazy as a bullbat, and J. Edgar Hoover, who wore women's underwear, decided some Americans had unacceptable political opinions. So they set our government to spying on its own citizens, basically those who were deemed insufficiently like Crazy Richard Milhous.

For those of you who have forgotten just what a stonewall paranoid Nixon was, the poor man used to stalk around the White House demanding that his political enemies be killed. Many still believe there was a certain Richard III grandeur to Nixon's collapse because he was also a man of notable talents. There is neither grandeur nor tragedy in watching this president, the Testy Kid, violate his oath to uphold the laws and Constitution of our country.

The Testy Kid wants to do what he wants to do when he wants to do it because he is the president, and he considers that sufficient justification for whatever he wants. He even finds lawyers like John Yoo, who tell him that whatever he wants to do is legal.

The creepy part is the overlap. Damned if they aren't still here, after all these years, the old Nixon hands -- Dick Cheney and Donald Rumsfeld, the whole gang whose yearning for authoritarian government rose like a stink over the Nixon years. Imperial executive. Bring back those special White House guard uniforms. Cheney, like some malignancy that cannot be killed off, back at the same old stand, pushing the same old crap.

Of course, they tell us we have to be spied on for our own safety, so they can catch the terrorists who threaten us all. Thirty-five years ago, they nabbed a film star named Jean Seberg and a bunch of people running a free breakfast program for poor kids in Chicago. This time, they're onto the Quakers. We are not safer.

1. I am so proud to be the 5th vote to put this where it belongs....
the Greatest Page!

"Folks, we KNOW this program is being and will be misused. We know it from the past record and current reporting. The program has already targeted vegans and People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals -- and, boy, if those aren't outposts of al-Qaida, what is? Could this be more pathetic?

This could scarcely be clearer. Either the president of the United States is going to have to understand and admit he has done something very wrong, or he will have to be impeached. The first time this happened, the institutional response was magnificent. The courts, the press, the Congress all functioned superbly. Anyone think we're up to that again? Then whom do we blame when we lose the republic?"

Give 'em Hell, Molly!

8. Thank you Molly
I just read that article to my room mate who, while very much a Dem, often takes the devils advocate position when things like this (domestic spying) happen. It opened up a conversation about the usual response of "if you aren't doing anything wrong ..." which she has stated many times. She nows gets it from my point of view.

She still believes that they are going to do what they want to do anyway, no matter what we think. I am trying to get her to understand that there is strength in numbers, just like there was in Watergate.

Thank you Molly, yet again.

11. Newsflash: If you're a US citizen on US soil YOU now fit the profile
And especially if you've purchased an Almanac lately and are a Teacher/Librarian. Guilty until proven innocent by databases riddled with errors. Just lovely.

The Freemasons (a secret society of men with principles born in blood out of the Knights Templar persecution) who founded this country are doing cartwheels in their graves.

12. Well, I don't know what your post said but,
I always think, as Molly Ivins goes, so goes the nation. Another one who's always usu. right on the money is Ann Richards. These 2 TX gals are 2 of the BEST thinkers and spokesmen for the Democratic Party. God bless these 2 Dem Queens!! :)

14. They're spying on US more than the terrorists, IMHO using "R" language
Read Spychips by Katherine Albrecht. And the fact that OBL is on kidney dialysis and they haven't tracked him down when they can track a pair of underware of mine if I bought it at Wal-Mart...doesn't that tell you something ?

17. The MSM won't use the word, so we have to do it.
People out there, if they pay attention at all, do not think about impeachment because they do not hear the word. CNN won't use it. The networks won't use it. So we have to do the work for them. Fine with me.

IMPEACH.

20. As a whole, I do not read ANYTHING from the creator's syndicate
But that was a decent read. Why is she in with a group the likes of Novak, Malkin, Buchannan, Chavez, Harrop, North, Judge Sowell. The only writer I've heard and read is Mark Shields. What is he doing there? I've seen him on PBS debating right wing so-called journalists and winning. Anyway, just my take on the whole matter!

21. I think Creators Syndicate functions as some kinda 'agent'
to these columnists. Like it bids with media outlets to get their clients into the money-making columns, appearances, etc. that they can. I don't think it's pro Reep or pro Dem in anyway.

Although one would imagine that as you have fairly pointed out.

22. Wonderful! I'll just add as illustration this great Tom Tomorrow graphic:
I have to agree with Molly, it's more than just intelligence, it's also any sign of concern for others or conscience. Still, this graphic sums up a lot:

Here is the cartoonist's blog site:
http://www.thismodernworld.com

And here is his store, where you'll find among other great stuff the "equation" graphic on bumper stickers, post cards, T shirts and more:

Finally, here is a DU thread with Tom Tomorrow's 2-parter "YEAR IN REVIEW" of 2005:
