2. Last resort, IMO
When you can't attack the argument, you attack the person delivering it. I think it's a sign of desperation (or general inability to reason and discuss issues like civilized people)

9. I know some
They are totally ashamed of their party right now and are either sitting out the next election or are voting Democratic. I say keep an open mind and look at each person individually. That way you can open up a dialog and sometimes get folks to change their minds.

13. I don't think that liberals resort to name-calling to the extent that
Republicans do. The Republican name-calling trend has turned into a very childish sort of thing.

I remember when it started, Rush Limbaugh used to call African Americans "whiners" and say that they "complained" about everything. When this tactic worked for the Republicans they began calling ALL Democrats names like this.

Now it has grown into such a second-grader-like excercisethat the Republican callers to C-Span don't realize just how STUPID (:)) they make themselves appear to the world by calling fellow Americans such ridiculous names.

5. That's all they've got
All neo-cons ever do is say nasty things about liberals. They never actually establish or defend their own position, because they know their record is terrible.

6. Desperation.
You'd think that having control of all three branches of government would make them happier than a pig in shit, but all they know is playing the victim, hate and vitriol.

11. That is a fascist communications strategy
Read the propaganda from the Third Reich. It's very similar. Part of the tactics associated with manipulating the totalitarian "mass mind" is labeling and intimidating anyone who doesn't follow the neo-brutalist treatment of fellow human beings.

Those who oppose torture, belligerence, violation of international law, and the police state have to be humiliated, denigrated, and persecuted for expressing their views in order to silence them. If that isn't enough, there is worse in store for them.

To create the survivalist, neo-darwinian context for "united we stand" (the essence of the fascist principle rather than pluralism and the First Amendment marketplace of ideas) repeated national security crises have to be invented to create an environment of fear to intimidate political opposition.

12. They're ignorant.. The only things they "know" about us is what their
"leaders" have told them, and they don't care about facts.. We could come up with a plan to give everyone a million dollars without raising taxes to do it, and they'd still hate us.. They are lazy intellectually, and it's just easier for them to hate on command than to actually sort any of the issues out for themselves.. I'm not trying to be harsh, I used to be a puke, and that's just how I see it.. They lost me the day I started taking the initiative to find out answers for myself, instead of just swallowing and regurgitating whatever I heard from them.. When I finally looked at the issues for myself, I figured out that I had been lied to.. Until we can get that side to look up info on their own, and stop relying on r-wing hate radio for "facts" we're not going to get anywhere..

15. Coverted Democrat
Has hit upon it, I think

Intellectusal laziness is a grave danger in any technologically advanced society, as
it allows media to totally dominate thinking for a large segment of the population who
is otherwise not intellectually challenged. These people are willing to surrender their
intellectual liberty for a drive in the SUV, or Monday Night Football, or whatever. When
a society has the opportunity to be informed, and forgoes it voluntarily, it surrenders
its claim to a say in its government, and declares itself ready to willingly follow the leader
even if that leader is headed right off the edge of a cliff.

As long as masses of people find it more comfortable to believe anything they are told,
rather than question it, or at least make a pretense at being inquisitive, they are
perfect victims of those who profit by lying to them. Their numbers are finally starting
to dwindle in the United States, but they are still alarmingly high, and more alarming
still is the large number that will die believing that two plus two is five as long as it
comes from the Republican Party or National Hate Radio.

20. psychology 101
* supporters sample heavily from that sad class of the populace who, having little reason to feel good about themselves, resort to trying cut everything and everyone down to their own level (especially those that they disagree with).

22. Sadly, they do it......
because it works. It's what the knuckledraggers and the religious nuts live for. It has been time tested for the last 5 or 6 election cycles and they will continue to use it until it stops working.

23. Simple strategy. Label your opponents and
others will remember the label and apply it, if they haven't decided what to think on their own. Same as military propaganda, disseminate enough lies and even if the "enemy" strongly refutes or disproves them, people remember the initial allegation and that becomes the truth...
