"We'll pick 1 night-every wk-where we will KILL whoever crosses border"
Casey Newton
The Arizona Republic
Apr. 4, 2006 12:00 AM

A talk radio discussion about shooting immigrants as they crossed the border has outraged a Valley interfaith group, whose members on Monday called for a federal investigation into the remarks.

Members of Arizona Interfaith Network gathered on the Capitol lawn to denounce remarks made by host Brian James during a March 8 broadcast on KFYI-AM (550).

The group's president, Dick White, played a recording in which James appeared to advocate violence toward immigrants. advertisement

"What we'll do is randomly pick one night - every week - where we will kill whoever crosses the border," James said. "Step over there and you die. You get to decide whether it's your lucky night or not. I think that would be more fun."

.................

James, a fill-in host who is on the air Tuesday evenings, said his remarks were taken out of context and that he did not support violence. ..

1. "appeared to advocate violence"???? Er killing IS advocating violence.
"Step over there and you die." ... no mere appearance of violence in that statement - it is a straightout call for murder.

2. The old "out of context" comment.
Sorry, when you have the entire quote, it's not really out of context and I don't see how that could be taken any other way. These idiots don't even understand the phrases they say. They think "out of context" means "I got caught".

7. Unless he prefaced the statement with, "What I am about to say...
...is not to be taken seriously. I am about to say something that I don't believe is true. This is a false statement", I don't see how it can be taken out of context. :grr:

3. "I think that would be more fun," he says
Another tough guy. It's SOOOO easy to be tough when you are the privileged one, isn't it, Mr. James? When you are the one with the full belly and the big gun, you can't help but swagger a bit, eh?

I'd like to see the tables turned on creeps like you. I'd like to see you crawling through the desert in the dark with your stomach growling, and then see how brave YOU are.

9. but I didn't *really* mean it... doesn't that make it okay?
folks like this don't realize that to over the edge listeners - hearing rhetoric is confirming of the beliefs... validating (see, everyone thinks this) and to those on the edge who are already isolated it can also be (here is how I become a hero...) Of course those given the public airwaves who fulminate in this way would *never* take any responsibility when/if one of their listeners acted on the words.
