Jon Stewart -WTF is his deal
He opened last nights show with a small bit on Delay and the crowd went ballistic but he then quickly threw in McKinneys altercation and ran with that instead of beating up on Delay somemore.

It might just be me but this looks as if he was trying to deflect Delays corruption over to the Dems.

Fuck him. This is the same as the pukes talking points about the Dems being tied to Jack mehoff.

Lets see if this trend continues.

I think like many Democrats, he overestimates the power of the so called "moderates leaning right."

They did not accurately take the pulse of the undercurrent of massive support our good congresswoman can look forward to IF CHARGED.

Edited on Wed Apr-05-06 08:11 AM by ShortnFiery
No harm in that ... you have to be a little "self-destrutive" to DARE take on the powers that be. It's those crazy "I will make the system work for the little guy" people who gave us our labor unions and lifted all workers up.

We need more so called "crazies" like McKinney in our government if ever us "little people" can hold onto the HOPE of being heard above the "cha ching" of corporate pay offs.

30. Delay is both an easy target and old news
Delay is CORRUPT? Surprise!

But the McKinney thing is new, and it was good comedy. McKinney is no saint, and regardless of the outcome, she is in the news right now. It was good comedy. If democrats can't take a few lumps on a 99% anti-republican show, then we have no business being in politics.

Edited on Wed Apr-05-06 10:42 AM by herbster
His "I'm mad as Hell and I'm not going to take it anymore" CNN appearance was great, but the worthwhile parts of his show are becoming fewer and fewer. My three biggest complaints:

1. The NPR-esque equal time to both "sides" crap
2. The cackling, juvenile, Jerry Lewis-like tone the show is taking on
3. The horrible interviews- it's painful to see guests unable to get a word in and then run out of time

edit: oops, I wasn't responding to Ress1 in particular, just the thread topic overall

18. DeLay is the gift that keeps on giving....
Local Republicans were caught off guard--the Houston Chronicle's main headline said something like "Scrambling Without DeLay."

On the morning news one of his "Christian" (as distinct from real Christian) allies called DeLay's legal problem persecution. Because he's such a good Christian. DeLay was shown speaking touchingly of Terry Schiavo. The news guys said he might have a future as a preacher--if he avoids prison. I detected a hint of sarcasm.

If Houston's "regular" media can poke subtle fun at the crook, I'm sure the Daily Show is preparing something really good. And he hasn't even gone to trial yet!

out that they're supposed to be keeping the Capitol safe from REAL weapons, and here they are making a big deal out of a tiny cell phone.

In all, he was making fun of **the reporting**, not slamming McKinney. Especially when he used that awful picture of her -- which the Corp media has been spreading around everywhere.

Did you watch the whole show? Because you don't seem to mention Cordoy satire on equivalency. You also don't mention the absolute destruction of John McCain, Jon's opening ripping Bush or Studs Terkel ripping the prez.

only making fun of the other side, refusing to see when someone on our side missteps, defending those missteps even if they become indefensible...sounds like the GOP play book to me.

I haven't been reading the threads here or paying attention to this issue but the clips he played from her press conference and on Blitzer...she bears some responsibility for making this story worse. She was arrogant and just awful. She deserves it. Watch it again. She's playing the victim when she would be better off to just apologize.

comedic purity from Stewart. He must make fun of the Repukes, but never the Dems. He must never mention a Democrat in less than glowing terms or we'll start threatening to throw him under the bus, or wondering if he's actually a covert DLC operative. I think, if Stewart read this thread, he'd probably be making fun of DU, too.

46. I kind of understand though: this is the result of years of cable TV using
"news" as "entertainment."

The level of cultural understanding of the two concepts has been blurred so badly that it is hard to turn on the TV right now and tell what is "serious" and what is "entertainment."

Think of the old Saturday Night Live...if we had the internet and DU back then, but regular TV...there would be no "WTF was up with Chevy Chase last night???"

Interesting, and a sad commentary on the times we live in.

Hard to deny Stewart's passion to criticize the current regime and criticize the news media for their lack of doing so. He feels its a threat to the democracy. But I would agree that he does not take ideological stances.

59. Kinda agree. Kinda disagree.
I don't think it's more than entertainment. It's primary purpose is to entertain.

But I agree that Stewart clearly disagrees with the current regime and thinks the media has done a very bad job. Any unbiased observer should be able to tell that Stewart is very much on our side politically. The fact that he sometimes takes pot-shots at Democrats does not change the fact that he is on our side. It seems obvious to me.

38. His DEAL is he's a comedian first
He isn't this great newsman .. he isn't this man who is going to topple the right wing with his reporting and his vigorous critquing. He is there to put on a good comedy show. Sometimes he'll make fun of things we'll find a riot . . and at times he'll make fun of things we think he shouldn't. There will always be "Fuck Jon Stewart" posts in G.D.

Stewart is one of the best things on television right now. I don't mind him taking a slam at Democrats every now and then . . they deserve it just as well.

Not to mention this Delay thing isn't going away . . Stewart has plenty of time in the future, and has done so plenty in the past to continue (Spelling?) slamming him.

What I find seriously depressing is that America has the mentality of "Junior High Students." You know those awkward years where we all worry about decorum and not looking out of place or, heaven forbid <gasp> bat shit insane.

That bat shit insane pushy-black-broad is the best hope for allowing the voices of the "little people" to be heard. Yeah, she's wired, but one of the very few congresspersons with the courage to put herself on the line, yes, unlike our other freaked out "oh my, we must fit in" representatives, she dared stand tall and strong.

Oh how embarrassing! Nope, not for me.

Long may McKinney rant for us people who are not afraid to call ourselves "liberal." Yes LIBERAL not progressive. :P

72. Anyone remember when Zsa Zsa Gabor slapped a cop?
Edited on Wed Apr-05-06 09:36 AM by IanDB1
That was funny, too.

Who is she?
Zsa Zsa Gabor - Hollywood actress and author of "The Complete Guide to Men" which is often referred to as the gold-digger's bible. She is more famous for her lengthy string of husbands and her numerous pairs of shoes, than she is for her acting.

What did she do?
Alledgedly, whilst driving through Beverly Hills, CA, Gabor was pulled over by a Police officer. Upon asking for her license and registration it was discovered they had both expired. After waiting ten minutes for the officer to confirm the records, Gabor drove away from the busy cop. Giving chase, the cop pulled Gabor over again and asked her to leave the vehicle. She did so, but slapped the officer in the process. He arrested her and on a subsequent search of the vehicle, a flask of bourbon was discovered.

When?
June 14, 1989

Charged?
Yep, alledgedly with Battery against an officer; disobeying an officer; driving without a registration; driving without a license; driving with an open container of alcohol.

Sentence?
Judge Rubin of the Beverly Hills Municipal Court found Gabor guilty of slapping an officer, and of two of the traffic offenses. Ms. Gabor was sentenced to 72 hours in jail, 120 hours of community service, and ordered her to pay court costs ($13,000)

Those of us who really know who we are are not ashamed of admitting "moments of deep disappointment." Especially when it relates to our political system.

We're all entitled to our mood swings ... we all have them - let's not be BushBots and deny it?

It's cool by me. I was a little peeved too but then thought ---> :wtf: he's a comedian!

However, I can understand your frustration when the only glimmers of hope for our democracy seems to be from "comedy sources." In our fear - mongered American, it seems the only way a person can be shamelessly liberal is through satire.

I understand where you're coming from and will refrain from Dis'ing you.

He is a non-partisan skewerer--although since he has certain standards of public decency, morality and honesty, he has been far more critical of Republicans than Democrats.

Republicans have been giving him terrific material for years but every once in a while a Democrat does something that is truly worthy of a prime spot on the Daily Show (like a member of Congress slugging a police officer) and he goes for it.

It's his job and he does it well. If you want total partisanship with nary a word about the absurdities of your own party, petition the DNC to host a comedy show--"Donkey Kicks" anybody.

I think Jon Stewart's "deal" is comedy.

He doesn't owe anything to either political party, or to you. I imagine if he heard you say "Fuck him" he'd make you look ridiculous on national television too.

You're acting like there's some kind of conspiracy between Jon and the GOP to undermine the values of Jon's liberal viewership or something. It's a fucking comedy show, get a grip. Like others have said: a woman smacking a cop is funnier subject matter than corrupt politicians.

Stewart's number one priority is to be funny,,,,at whoever's expense.

The day he starts choosing political correctness in favor of only Democrats over being funny is the day Comedy Central beings looking for his replacement.

He has millions of dollars worth of reasons why he's not going to let that happen.

then surely Jon Stewart (who is much funnier than Cheney) can joke about a woman smacking a cop.

Anyone who disagrees with me hates America and is only giving aid and comfort to Bill O'Reilly.

There.

The anti-Jon-Stewart insurgency is in its last throes.

We're laughing at them on The Daily Show, so we don't have to laugh at them on Fox.

That is why we have to learn to value other women and ourselves to raise the level of consciousness that is being attacked by Neanderthals yet again. We need to build more appreciation for each other, and for those who aren't white, racist, privileged, insulated males like Tom Delay and his friends, who have this nasty little habit destroying everything on the planet and making everyone else clean it up.

Edited on Wed Apr-05-06 04:07 PM by shance
Jon Stewart is not a Neanderthal, but he is a stupid, thoughtless guy sometimes.

You know, when good people who are trying to do the right thing are being attacked unfairly, I'll defend them, no matter who they are. I think its everyones responsibility to help those who are being assaulted by bigger, more aggressive, just meaner individuals. When I mention the bigger meaner variety, I mean those namely in certain positions of power in Washington. I don't mean Hollywood. Thank God for the educated, informed caring individuals that use Hollywood as a messenger when they can.

You know, sometimes its not real funny being a woman.

With that said sometimes its not real funny being a man, particularly right now with young kids being sent to die in Iraq and Afghanistan when they have their whole lives ahead of them, or so they did.

Lightening up to make others comfortable Baker I don't think is the best remedy for anyone. Seems to me the best remedy is to try and empathize, support and defend those that are being treated unfairly in whatever way we can.

Lastly, since neither has been convicted of any crime, they are legally of equal standing, so does Jon Stewart have to get a report from you on who is acceptable to joke about, since you offer no consistent standard other than your feeling?

135. If you guys don't want Jon Stewart making fun of McKinney
Call her office and tell her to stop holding press conferences and going on news shows and talking like an idiot.

I think the whole point of the Daily Show is that they make fun of politicians and journalists who deserve to be made fun of, regardless of party or ideology. It says a lot that such a show spends most of its time making fun of Republicans and conservatives and FOX News - it isn't because Stewart is exclusively targeting them, but rather because they are the most consistently worthy of mockery. But if a Democrat or liberal starts talking stupid, I expect Stewart to be right there ready to rip into them. That's what he does and that doesn't bother me at all.

The funniest thing about his show is that the Right Wing Neo-Cons are so in love with themselves that they think "the character" played is the real deal.

I call it a new entry for the DSM-IV ... I give you - The Archie Bunker Syndrome

Way back in the days of the Vietnam War Era, "All in the Family" was a big hit on TV. Some of my happiest moments were when the insane branch of the conservative republicans FINALLY figured out that, the person, Carroll O'Connor, was actually a flaming liberal.

I kid you not they were devastated! Like a motherless child. Wa aaa! LOL

Yep, The Cobert Report accomplishes the same goal: Making fun of the Right Wing Republicans with their full cooperation. Priceless?

Clay's character was supposed to be a ridiculous idiot.

Instead, people took him at face value, without a sense of irony.

That's why he stopped performing at the height of his career.

After posting my last piece, I just had to say that. That’s all for now.

UPDATE: OK, Maybe that’s not all for now. Too bad Zsa Zsa didn’t use the Driving While Hungarian defense.

UP-UPDATE: Looks like someone named Mantis was the first to call her the Georgia Congresswoman Zsa Zsa McKinney in a comment to Wizbang on March 31, 2006 @ 12:51. (I googled “Zsa Zsa McKinney” after posting this.) Drat! And I thought I was the first. Kudos, Mantis!

UP-UP-UPDATE: Looks like I was a little hasty, as Treebeard might say. Dan S. also called her Zsa Zsa McKinney on March 31 while conservativeman (anonymous) used that nickname on March 30 @ 12:22 PM. Laurence Simon, however, seems to have beaten him by 22 minutes. Kudos, Laurence!

There's a war on christians, remember?

Anyway, as long as it keeps the GOP controlled congress from voting on something important, I say let them investigate her.

And after that, let's spend a few days investigating steroids in baseball.

Maybe they won't get around to gay marriage, abortion, tax cuts for the rich, immigration and other things with a real-world impact before the midterm elections.

Let's keep the GOP-controlled congress with the GOP super-majority wrapped-up in silly crap as much as we can.

Maybe another Democrat can assault someone? Santorum could use a good kick in the crotch. Or maybe someone could put a poisoned pubic hair in Justice Thomas' Coke? (That's a satirical riff).

But that's not the point.

Regardless of the color of her skin or her political party, or even her level of sanity, when a woman smacks a cop in the face it's good fodder for a comedy show.
