550 KFYI responds to the Arizona Interfaith Network

Program Director Laurie Cantillo: "550 KFYI has not been contacted by anyone from the Arizona Interfaith Network, nor have we received any complaints from listeners about Brian James' show on March 8."

Monday, April 3, 2006

Program Director Laurie Cantillo:

"550 KFYI has not been contacted by anyone from the Arizona Interfaith Network, nor have we received any complaints from listeners about Brian James show on March 8. We were excluded from the AIN news conference on April 3 and leaders of this organization have refused to talk with our reporters, saying 'we only talk to credible news organizations.'

"The charges are being made almost one month after the comments were made by a fill-in host who is not a KFYI employee. Our hosts have many perspectives on the immigration issue and do not speak with one voice. We do not advocate violence and have used our talk shows to seek a peaceful solution to the border issue. To paint all 550 KFYI hosts and reporters with the same broad brush is inaccurate and needlessly inflammatory. Brian James' comments were made in a satirical manner and should be interpreted as such. If the intent of AIN is to diffuse tensions in the community, their actions are having the opposite effect."

Host Brian James:

"As a talk show host sometimes things I say get taken out of context or are exaggerated. I do not in any way advocate shooting illegal immigrants. The fact that it's necessary for me to address this shows my remarks were taken out of context.

"We are making little or no progress in dealing with the growing illegal immigration problem. My satire was intended to underscore the inaction. How much progress are we making on the issue when more attention is being paid to the ranting and ramblings on the radio than to the growing illegal immigration problem?"

I viewed this story on Phoenix Ch 12 news at 10pm 4-3-06 however I have not been able to find anything at their website for this story as yet. All of the above information has been found on KFYI radio stations website as of 4-3-06.
