California medicinal marijuana advocate Steve Kubby has been ordered to leave Canada, where he fled to escape a Placer County drug possession conviction six years ago.
Canadian Border Services ordered Kubby and his family to leave the country by January 12. Kubby, who helped write and pass California's 1996 medical marijuana law, goes back to a Canadian court Monday to seek a delay.
Kubby said he fears he could die from a rare form of adrenal cancer if he returns to Placer County and is not allowed to smoke marijuana while he serves a 120-day sentence imposed after a 200 conviction for possession of peyote buttons and psychedelic mushrooms. Kubby could also face additional jail time for fleeing the country.
