Savage: "Burn the Mexican Flag!"
Edited on Fri Mar-31-06 02:50 PM by kpete
Savage: "Burn the Mexican Flag!"

Summary: Michael Savage repeatedly called on his listeners to "burn the Mexican flag" in opposition to illegal immigrants. Savage claimed that the only way to combat the onslaught of illegal immigrants is through protest and asked his audience to "burn a Mexican flag for America, burn a Mexican flag for those who died that you should have a nationality and a sovereignty, go out in the street and show you're a man, burn 10 Mexican flags, if I could recommend it. Put one in the window upside down and tell them to go back where they came from!"

58. Everybody is giving this jerk too much credit!
In the times I have listened to Michael Savage, either by accident or on purpose, the guy was all over the freakin' place. There was no consistency. I would even describe it as incoherent. It was strange to listen too. Even stranger was that there were people who called up to agree with him. It seemed as if he spent more time dissing conservatives than he did liberal or progressives. Go figure!

12. I went to the US v. Mexico baseball games a few weeks ago
There were many more Mexico flags carried by fans than US flags. What does this mean? I dunno. But I think flag flying is more common than you may. Just my 2 cents.

18. The crowd wasn't hostile to the US team
Soccer is their game so they are more passionate. Plus soccer fams tend to get ugly.

The US team wasn't even booed (except for A-Rod and everybody hates him). No different than Cubs v. Cardinals really.

22. Neither was the crowd here
Edited on Fri Mar-31-06 03:12 PM by RGBolen
US team was cheered here when they were introduced and both teams were cheered after the game. But during the game, Mexico was the "home" team as far as the crowd, with a sea of Mexican flags.

I've been to a Cubs/Cardinals game in 1984. Funniest thing we are on the train everyone has on something Cubs or Cardinals and a couple from St. Louis gets on at a stop and asks "Is this train going to Wrigley Field?" Everyone just kind of looked at each other, and a guy in a Cardinals jersey said "If it's not it's a pretty damn good trick, ain't it."

I saw a lot of posts from people who felt it was wrong to put the Mexican flag over the US flag, but I don't recall calls to burn the Mexican flag.

It all just goes to show that flags are potent symbols and their use sends a message.

Mexican flag burned at Apache Junction HS

Tensions over immigration reform heightened in the Phoenix area's East Valley Thursday when students raised a Mexican flag over Apache Junction High School — and then other students yanked it down and burned it.

====================

It's getting tenser and tenser here in the great southwest.

Read Emma Lazurus--

The New Colossus

Not like the brazen giant of Greek fame,

With conquering limbs astride from land to land;

Here at our sea-washed, sunset gates shall stand

A mighty woman with a torch, whose flame

Is the imprisoned lightning, and her name

Mother of Exiles. From her beacon-hand

Glows world-wide welcome; her mild eyes command

The air-bridged harbor that twin cities frame.

"Keep ancient lands, your storied pomp!" cries she

With silent lips. "Give me your tired, your poor,

Your huddled masses yearning to breathe free,

The wretched refuse of your teeming shore.

Send these, the homeless, tempest-tost to me,

I lift my lamp beside the golden door!"

73. Actually, you're wrong there.
It is not illegal to burn a cross in public. The KKK does it all the time during their meetings, and you can burn one in your yard without anything happening to you (unless it's generally against the law to burn things in your yard where you live).

What makes it a hate crime is intent, not action. If you're doing it to protest an action or policy, or to voice your opinion, the action is perfectly legal. If you're doing it to intimidate people, there's a legal line being crossed (important difference: It doesn't matter whether you ARE intimidated, but whether that was the intent). When a KKK member burns a cross in a park, he does it to intimidate blacks and is committing a hate crime. If I burned a cross in the same park to protest the effect that fundamentalist christian assholes are having on our society, that would be perfectly legal.

Same goes for the flag. If someone's burning a flag to intimidate Mexicans, you may have a valid hate crimes charge. If they're burning it to protest Mexico or the actions of Mexicans, it's protected speech.

Let's hold a public "book" burning where we take as many copies of Savages' hateful tomes stupidity and set them on fire in Newport Beach. Of course, his "books" are fuel for the American Taliban so they should produce a flame taller than the tallest buildings in Los Angeles.
