View host put fundie preacher Osteen on spot about Jews & Robertson
Happened to sort of see part of The View today and Joy Behar(is that her name?) and maybe Barbara Walters too put questions about Jews-are-going-to-hell and Pat Robertson to him, really got him looking irritated. The little blonde twinkie was trying her best to help him.Anyway,I couldn't really watch it,so if somebody in another time zone or TV schedule-land could check it out,it looked pretty good. eom

2. call me Krazy but I like Osteen
and I'm one of The Chosen! I've listened to him a couple of times, and like his positivity and appeal to people to harnes their power, improve their lives, treat others with kindness. I don't find him overtly 'religious'- his communication style is inclusive. I don't think of him as a 'Fundie'. I myself wouldn't put the guy down- he's a positive force, inmy opinion. It wouldn't surprise me if he were a secret-Dem!

3. He's more of a self-help guru than a preacher.
He admittedly skips over all the serious issues in religion because his point is to lift people up. He won't answer questions about abortion, hell, etc. I think he's kind of a fraud myself. How can you call yourself a preacher when all you really are is a cheerleader?

He isn't even close to most of them when it comes to being a complete fool.

13. I don't have any problems with Osteen's teachings
Conservatives have issues with him, and would likely say that the fact that I don't have any problems with his teaching, as a liberal, then there must be something wrong with it!

My only complaints are the same major ones I have with all of his ilk-materialism goes against Jesus' teachings. Joel does get the unconditional love part right, which most don't get, so I give him credit for that.

Joel's also probably the cutest tv preacher out there.

4. Well, he did everything he could to avoid taking a position on anything.
Maybe I'm a cynic but that guy strikes me as the most saccharine, disingenuous, and pseudo-pious person I've ever seen.

15. And he blinks too much, kind of like Georgie when he knows he's lying...
...which is, pretty much every time he opens his mouth.

There are other reasons for frequent blinking, including medical conditions. But Bush blinks too much because he's a liar and, since it must take a lot of BS-slinging to maintain that big, fancy church of his, I'm guessing that Osteen falls into the same category.

5. Did they ask him about the hissy-fit that his wife had in first class
last December that got them thrown off the plane?

11. There's a guy here who started a church that has grown quite large.
Take a look at his web site. Notice how his enhaloed visage appears, at the top of each page?

A woman I know who goes to his church (and just adores the man) told me that he wanted a Corvette but, before getting it, he asked the congregation to tell him whether he should buy it or not. They told him to go ahead and get it because he should be richly rewarded for the godly work he was doing. Well, I guess he figured that one rich reward deserves another because, now, he has two Corvettes.

And a Mustang.

And a big black Suburban that his little, blonde trophy wife uses to cart the youngest of their seven children to school in. I know about his cars because I pass his house every day. And he can't hide them all because even though he has a great big garage, a third of it is occupied by his overly-mirrored workout room.

It really is something of a cult that worships this guy. Stephen King ought to write a story about him because he is ultra deluxe creepy.

12. I live in Houston, and pass by Osteen's house frequently...

I have never seen anything of the sort you are describing. In fact, his garage is barred from view by a very large solid iron gate. Also, he and his wife, Victoria, only have 2 children, an older boy and a younger girl.

He has many times spoken of the car he drives, a lexus. It was his father's car, before he had it. So it is a used car, many years old.

ps. to include that the reason he spoke of the story of how he came to own the lexus, was that he heard that members of his congregation were wondering why he was driving a lexus. He wanted to reassure them that it wasn't anything new, and had been driven for many years before by his father. So I have trouble believing your story about the corvettes or mustang.

22. Did the good Mr. Osteen mention any other vehicles in his possession?
In addition to the used, dilapidated Lexus that he so humbly drives, a number of reports state that he also owns two Porsches.

20. Where's the damn IRS - they watch (and audit) me like a hawk,
but they let these guys buy boy toys off the backs of the congregations. This country is f___ked.

21. Right off the backs of their congregations.
And, in this particular cult of personality, here in Tucson, the members actually want him to have his toys.

I've looked through his web site and I can't find any indication that he uses the revenue he collects to help the poor and suffering in this town or anywhere else, for that matter. However, the "church" where he performs his cultish mindfucks is quite an edifice.

As Betty Bowers would say, "Praise."
