In July 2004, when the Intelligence Committee released a 511-page report on its investigation of prewar intelligence by the CIA and other agencies, Sen. Richard Durbin, D-Ill., said in his own "Additional Views" to the report, "Concurrent with the production of a National Intelligence Estimate is the production of a one-page President's Summary of the NIE. A one-page President's Summary was completed and disseminated for the October 2002 NIE ... though there is no mention of this fact in report. These one-page NIE summaries are ... written exclusively for the president and senior policy makers and are therefore tailored for that audience."

Durbin concluded, "In determining what the president was told about the contents of the NIE dealing with Iraq's weapons of mass destruction -- qualifiers and all -- there is nothing clearer than this single page."

In short, this NIE Summary, the one that proves Bush knew that he was making dodgy claims, was among the material that Addington and Libby refused to turn over to the SSCI. And they refused to turn it over even while Durbin insisted that only the Summary would reveal what Bush knew and when he knew it.

They deliberately refused to turn over the evidence that Bush knew the intelligence was dodgy.

But it's not too late. It seems to me this NIE Summary is precisely the kind of thing the Phase II investigation needs to have to be able to determine whether BushCo politicized the intelligence. C'mon, Senate Whitewash Intelligence Committee, Murray Waas has done your work for you. Tell us again, did President Bush politicize the intelligence?

He did not listen to "faulty intelligence." He was not the victim of people telling him WMDs existed in Iraq when all intelligence said there wasn't.

I called and asked about the progress on Phase 2 of the report that Roberts is supposed to be doing. Kay Sharp (Overland Park office) said the report would probably, maybe released in March. She wouldn't be more precise than "probably, maybe in March." Just thought I'd let you guys know when that report (probably, maybe) should be coming out.

Here (roughly) was that conversation:

Kay: Hello, this is Kay with Senator Roberts' office. How may I help you?

Me: Hi, this is (gave her real name and phone number) and just so you know, I'm a member of the Democratic Party. Anyway, I have a question. I was just talking with a friend from out-of-state and he wanted to know whatever happened to Phase 2 of the Senate Intelligence Committee's report on the intelligence failures concerning Iraq.

Kay: Yes.

Me: Well, I was wondering too. What happened to it?

Kay: It is proceeding, probably, maybe... It should probably, maybe be done in March. They've been working on it. All along, they have been working on it. Probably done in March.

Me: Of this year?

Kay: Yes, this year.

Me: That's next month.

Kay: It will probably be done in March, sometime in March.

Me: Early March? Late March? NCAA tournament time March?

Kay: March. Probably sometime in March.

Me: Okay, well thanks for your time. I'll tell my friend. We're all looking forward to reading it.

Kay: Thank you for calling. <click>

I didn't get a chance to ask her how much she thought would be redacted from the public. But this is the current "timetable" from Kay at Senator Roberts' Overland Park office.

FWIW: Kay is Kay Sharp.

....just a few months prior to the elections. Understandably, Roberts and the other repubs will do everything in their power to keep from releasing anything.

I damn sure hope the Dems are keeping the pressure on to get ALL the truth out once Phase II is released.....and frankly I don't care when it's released, just as long as it's not a whitewash.
