Letter to Father Paul Scalia
Rev. Paul Scalia
Diocese of Arlington, Virginia
Chaplain, Arlington Chapter of Courage
200 North Glebe Road
Arlington, VA 22203

Dear Father Scalia,

Today the Boston Herald published a photo of your father, Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia, making an obscene gesture in the Cathedral of the Holy Cross after Mass. This was shortly after Justice Scalia had received Holy Communion during the Season of Lent. I'm sure as a Catholic priest you find this conduct offensive and disrespectful of our Lord.

I do not think that someone who treats our Lord with such disrespect should be permitted to receive the Sacrament of Holy Communion. When Catholics receive the Sacrament of Holy Communion they receive the Grace of God inside them. When Justice Scalia made that gesture he threw away the Grace of God. Since he can so easily discard the Grace of God so soon after receiving Holy Communion, he should be barred from receiving the sacrament.

1. Legally by Canon Law there is no case
The priest could still talk to Antonin about his action and encourage him to come in for confession over it and then it would be "case closed".

Even I am against witholding communion over this. I take the same stance when the pro-choice Democratic politicans (never Republicans) get this thrown at them all the time.

2. No one knows the precise value of any given act.
Communion is for sinners too.
