Please try to spell your HEADLINES correctly?
It reflects on all of us when you have typos and misspelled words in the headlines of your postings.

The EDIT button can correct a headline that has an inadvertent typo!

Thanks!

Sincerely,

- Nit-pickers for a better tomorrow.

If you mean the capitalization of HEADLINES, that is an appropriate tool from newspaper practice.

Not that I care...I'm just clarifying it.

18. Hmmm... Not what Sister Mary Albert taught me years ago.
She would have said that the sentence was an actual question because it was a request which was not rhetorical, and so the response was unknown.

37. Seriously. I believe I am correct.
Edited on Wed Mar-29-06 11:16 AM by benburch
She taught us that if you are soliciting further information you use a question mark.

If I said; "Would you please use correct spelling in your postings?" you would likely agree that this is correct, as it is a question.

"Please use correct spelling in your postings?" is identical with the above, and "Would you" is understood.

"Please use correct spelling in your postings." would be a directive, not a request.

65. Well, she was wrong. I come from a family history of English
buffs and writers, and a question mark only properly follows a stated question--regardless of a hypothetical answer in response. If your sentence can be punctuated with a period and sound correct, it can't also alternately be punctuated with a question mark.

Just sayin'--cause you're gonna piss the grammar folks off with this one.

On the other hand, your spelling is divine. :P

Many papers use "screamer" heds on rare occasions, such as 9.11, when my paper ran "NATION ATTACKED." Normally, newspapers use "down style," as in "Bush is a big doo-doo head," or, less typically, "up style," as in "Bush Is a Big Doo-Doo Head."

2. Is this a little bit of elitism?
I sometimes feel the same way about posts, Ben. But then I went to a private prep school, private university, and topped out at graduate school. (And I still make spelling/grammatical errors! Thank goddess for the spell check, at least!) It is up to me to correct the logic errors, and I guess considering everything that is what is most important -- but is it? Sometimes maybe conveying passion and empathy and other emotions is important too. Maybe the bottom line is: Communication, whatever it takes...

48. Poor spelling does NOT = moron. Many mathematical genuises
simply don't care about language. This I know as both my father and grandfather fall into this category. And they wouldn't waste their time having a spell checker or editor, edit their ideas in this type of format. Also as pointed out in other posts, there are other non-moron reasons why spelling and typing may be incorrect.

6. TELL ME you AREN"T serious!
This is the exact reasoning that was used to keep illiterates and blacks from voting back in the day. I think any reasonable thinker of democracy should and is allowed on DU. I for one would not be embarrassed to know that we have folks on the boards that don't spell well. For example, the semi-genius logistitians are often spelling challenged; do we want them out, NO! For example, the bi-lingual persons for whom English is a second or third language; do we want the out, NO. And lastly the hard working folks that have probably been working since they were in their early teens for minimum wage or less and didn't have time or environment to make spelling a priority; do we want them out, NO!

I too tend to be a bit anal about things, but the message you send here is downright unthoughtout. Nit pick yourself for a better tomorrow, leave the rest to decide what is important to them. This is a sight of common ideology; poor spelling on some posts only adds to the knowledge that we have culturally, intellectually, and environmentally diverse community; a very good thing in my eyes.

9. Another Spell-checker option - link
http://www.iespell.com/

ieSpell - A Spell Checker for Internet Explorer

ieSpell is a free Internet Explorer browser extension that spell checks text input boxes on a webpage. It should come in particularly handy for users who do a lot of web-based text entry (e.g. web mails, forums, blogs, diaries). Even if your web application already includes spell checking functionality, you might still want to install this utility because it is definitely much faster than a server-side solution. Plus you get to store and use your personal word list across all your applications, instead of maintaining separate ones on each application.

I'm just exercising my own right to state an opinion here -- after 16,000 posts.

On edit: There used to be a DU rule prohibiting profanity in subject lines, but the admins gave up! I don't think we should go back there, but I think too much diminishes not only the board, but the effect of these words when really needed.

diversity within these boards for fear that we would be otherwise begin to become the elitists we don't care for. If posters here are going to have their personal preferences slammed and judged by educational, environmental, cultural, or personal choices; then we begin to slide into the slime of the republicans and could loose some otherwise great posters and comrads.
