DU Folding@Home team
Back in 1998, I was introduced to the SETI project through some obscure website I was visiting, so I decided to try it out. It worked pretty well, but eventually I became dissatisfied with the research and results. Without getting into a discussion of the possibilities of extra terrestrial life here, I decided donating my computer time to that sort of project was a waste of time (other than proving the capability of distributed computing projects), and eventually stopped for several years. Then in the middle of 2003, I saw a reference to the Satnford projuct (Folding@Home) and decided it was a worthwhile project to donate computer resources to.

Today I noticed that Kos members set up a Folding@Home team
http://www.dailykos.com/story/2005/12/22/13216/695

I created a team for DU (Team number 48157)and would be willing to change teams if more people are interested in joining this group

DU Team stats: http://fah-web.stanford.edu/cgi-bin/main.py?qtype=teampage&teamnum=48157

The long term possibilities - even medium term possibilities - are tremendously exciting. Every day's folding helps to build the knowledge that will someday produce cures.

2. Do they use BOINC?
I've had SETI in the background for years - ever since its first year. They've migrated to BOINC software, so folks can allocate their slack time across various projects.

5. Folding@Home not part of BOINC
Folding @ Home has a beta BOINC client, but they have chosen not to release it because of problems with the network.

Download the F@H client here:

30. No - you just have to download a simple code
Basically it is a small program you download that receives mathematical problems from Stanford scientists, works on them and sends them back.

It's that simple.

35. correct - you don't have to do anything else
The study of protein misfolding is extremely computer intensive. It takes some of the most powerful computers to solve some of the simplest questions about protein misfolding. Building ever more powerful computers can be prohibitively costly, many times running into hundreds of millions of dollars. It would take the fastest PC 30 years to simulate the folding of one protein. Luckily, Folding@home has come up with a novel solution to this problem. By breaking the problem in to thousands of tiny pieces and sending them to the approximately 100,000 volunteer computers around the world, the project can solve the same problem in a couple months. The volunteer computers analyze the tiny problems (called Work Units or WUs) simultaneously, sending them back over the internet to the Folding@home scientists.

9. What is Folding@home?
Folding@home is a distributed computing effort by the Stanford University to compute protein folding to understand how to combat many of the worlds diseases, like Cancer, Mad Cow (CDJ, human form), Alzheimer's, ALS and Parkinson's disease.

Over 2,00,000 Mac and PC users run this small application on their computers to put their spare CPU cycles to use and help contribute to this worldwide project that requires hundreds of thousands, if not millions of processors to complete. No effort on your part is required, the program loads a work unit, finishes it and gets another automatically, all with high encryption back and forth from Stanford's servers. No personal information is required, just a nickname and a team number.

It doesn't interfere with your normal usage, it runs at the same time as other applications, utilizing your spare CPU cycles, you just set it and forget it. All Folding@home versions will self scale down if you require more CPU, instantly; meaning it will get out of your way if your running other applications at the same time.

Points are generated for every finished work unit that goes towards your score and towards the teams.

it shows a little red icon in the tray. You just pass your mouse over it and it gives you a number. I'm assuming that's the progress of what it's done. For instance mine is 90/500 and I assume 500 is the actual goal.

Anyway, if it's working, you'll probably see that icon in your tray............

Guess they can't quite get their whole act together.

36120 - Free Republic Folders = 1185 of 41851 -- 1460 WUs

They're still leading us on both teams, though. For now. I hope we see a surge in our numbers soon. :)

77. Likely in a config file.

Don't have it installed, but look for a /etc/folding* file or something. Or locate folding, if you have locate installed, and see where it stores config settings. Or whatever other tricks you know. Then just edit the file, look for a team setting, save and restart.

80. Hope this helps
Folding@home, represents a sort of ad hoc democracy because anyone with an Internet connection can join. Users simply download an application that runs protein-folding simulations on their desktop computers when the systems are idle.

Analyzing a protein’s possible folding steps as it crumples up into a 3-D knot is daunting task, even for a supercomputer, because the molecular backbone of a protein can fold in trillions of different ways. While several supercomputers used together could handle the job, time slots on supercomputers are tight and very expensive.

Through Folding@home, scientists now have the horsepower to study the mechanics of protein folding. With its ability to share the workload among hundred of thousands of computers economically, Folding@home can help scientists understand how proteins snap, or don’t, into their predestined shapes — and may help to explain the origins of diseases such as Alzheimer’s and apparently unrelated diseases.

102. A question:
I've signed up and downloaded the software. I have 4 computers on my home network. If I install the software and sign up with each computer under the same name, will it screw up the system? Does it process the same work unit on all my computers, or does each work a separate WU? I've installed it on two of my computers, but wanted to make sure that what I'm doing is okay before installing on the other two.

134. This is great! I Just Downloaded It And Joined The DU Team But Need Help
Edited on Wed Dec-28-05 11:00 PM by OPERATIONMINDCRIME
though. It downloaded via a dos window and now says completed 0 of 500000 steps. Is this now running? That's all I had to do?

I chose to run as service at startup, but right now the dos window is just minimized on the toolbar. I want it hidden. Will it do that the next time I boot up? Just want to make sure all is in order :)

Thanks.

137. Thanks. Wow, It Wastes No Time! LOL It started that in the same flash as
the download itself! I clicked download, a black box popped up on my screen, asked me a couple questions, scrolled for half a second and then voila, it was folding already. That's pretty cool. I just hope when I reboot it isn't on my toolbar, or my wife will probably keep closing out of it.

Edited on Fri Dec-30-05 07:23 PM by alfredo
I notice that when I launch it, the port is busy. If I kill the process, it would start. That might be what is causing my trouble. I already have a fah client running, but it appears that they both want to use the same port. I think I will just stay with running the one client, on one processor, then the boinc on the other processor.

How would you know.

I just grabbed the first download I saw for my OS. Noted it was text based, and since I still miss DOS I was pleasantly surprised at the limited amount of Windows magic employed.

My third unit has now terminated early due to instability. :(

It may not like my computer, which tends to run hot.

194. I am keeping the window open now to see if there are any error
messages when it gets to the end. It appears that both the CLI and the GUI versions were acting up. I think it might have to do with the changing of the ports, I was killing the process that was conflicting with the CLI client. that could be why I am getting the errors.

and further more (since I'm sick of SETI) if I download the console, using OSX, how do I get it to start automatically on booting? I downloaded it last week, and when I rebooted, I lost the console, only had the screen saver. since I run a laptop, I don't spend a lot of time on the screensaver, but I don't use all my processing power, and would have no problem with the console running in the background all the time.

thanks-

First, download the client: http://folding.stanford.edu/download.html

To join a team, just put the team's number in the configuration panel (on graphical clients) or enter the team number at the first time you run the client (for text console versions).

The DU Team number is: 48157

WINDOWS GRAPHICAL CLIENT INSTALLATION

Note: As of version 5, screensaver functionality is built into the standard GUI client (which is suitable for Windows 2000/NT/XP).

Note: Win 98/ME users should use the version 4.00 Graphical client client.

(1) Download the client software (press back on the browser and choose the link for the Windows NT/2000/XP Graphical client or Windows 98/ME Graphical client depending on the OS your using.

(2) Run the Folding@Home5.EXE program (double click on the icon in the location where you saved it). Since we're constantly improving and releasing new clients, consider updating once in a while to get the new features.

(3) The installation program will ask you some questions (e.g. where would you like to install the files). It is recommended that you choose the default values wherever appropriate (on most systems this will be in C:\ProgramFiles). It will install itself into the specified directory and create a program group (Start > Programs > Folding@Home by default). It will also put Folding@Home into Start->Program Files->Startup, so that it is automatically launched upon login. You may remove this if you do not want an auto-start.

(4) Folding@Home is now installed and may be run by Clicking Start > Programs > Folding@Home > Folding@Home5.00 (though if auto-startup is enabled -- see above point -- then this is not required). The first time it is run the client will ask you to enter some Configuration information -- if you would like to run the program as a Screensaver, then check the Screensaver box that is under the Display tab of the Configuration window (you may also wish to make F@H a Scheduled Task through Windows Settings, Figure 4, so that it launches automatically when you computer begins). The program will download the latest scientific core if the bundled core needs to be updated. This core is approx 400Kb, and could therefore take a little time to download, ~2-5 min on a modem. During the download the client will display the download progress in the lower left hand corner of the main window.

(5) When it is running, Folding@Home will display a little red icon in the taskbar, which may be left-clicked on to enable the protein visualisation window, or right clicked on to switch to fullscreen mode or run the configuration window, where user/team information can be updated.

This should get you started. :)

203. DU Folding
Just came across this thread and decided to add my machines to the fray. As for stats junkies (ME ME ME!!), this site: http://folding.extremeoverclocking.com/team_list.php?s= has really good stats, probably the best out there for F@H IMHO. The DU team doesnt show there yet tho, that site only shows top 2000 teams... We have a ways to go but seems we are well on our way.

226. Slow, Deliberate Folding...

I have been using my iBook to run the program, so far, as I am in SE Asia on vacation. After a few days of running the program I am only progressing at the rate of 1% per hour or so. Is there a problem with my computer that it is taking this long to finish one WU? 68.50% so far. I wonder if there are a lot of other team members, just as I am, still working to complete their first WU? My biz in the states is computer saturated, I am planning to hook some of them up also. I believe, and I will predict, that we will be in the top 400 within a month!

Edited on Mon Jan-02-06 09:30 AM by mcscajun
The program lets you Pause work, so you could always pause the work while you have to do more important stuff, and resume when you're done.

OR -- You can remove it from auto-start, and just turn it on when you know you're not going to be needing your PC. It flies through WUs when left to its own devices. Then you can turn it off when you need your CPU. It saves the work already done on shutdown, and resumes (picking up any work lost --at most 15 minutes worth) when you turn it back on.

I've been leaving my PC on at night when I go to bed, but turning off the monitor (that's the electrical power hog). I only do that when the weather is good, though; don't want to risk a power outage with a running CPU, ya' know.
