Original thread is here:

http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=show_mesg&forum=364&topic_id=733987&mesg_id=733987

Helen Thomas is getting roses! Donations will be accepted until Monday morning - then I will buy the roses for her which will be fed exed overnight. Vases and buckets are included. They are being purchased at www.organicbouqet.com - they are selling them by the 12 dozen (a dozen dozen) at $180 including shipping.

I will include the names of all on the thank you card which will read something like:

Thank you Helen for bringing up the Project for a New American Century in the corporate media and for asking the President the questions all Americans want answered about Iraq! We've got your back!

Speaking of Helen Thomas and PNAC, check out this link too!

because I have a different opinion than you do. What I leave on my plate is of no concern to you. Sending Helen a dozen roses is great but a dozen dozen is wasteful IMO. I hope the poster before you is correct and she sends them on for more to enjoy.

117. Nothing else has worked to get the PNAC out into the CM...
Why not try it?I want the rest of the press to know about it. Perhaps Helen would write an article introducing the PNAC to the public?

It could start something along the lines of...
An odd thing happened yesterday, I was sent x roses because I mentioned a think tank on CNN. It seems that a lot of people think that it is unknown to most Citizens and that an important discussion to have in the press would be about who the PNAC are and their plan for global domination. ...

110. i would bet it will be a huge wake up to all the other white house
so called journalists!!

they will get the message loud and clear..we mean business and the business we want discussed is our business.,.and that is the responsibility of journalists to do their damn job..

that will help not only our constitution, but the victims of Katrina as well..because until the so called journalists do their damn job..we have nothing but propaganda..and we all end up like the victims of katrina..without a constitution..with third world wages, and a third world nation , the destruction of our republic and more damn wars for the pnac boys!

just my opinion..and i sent in 50 bucks..i just love Helen she has my utmost respect!..she is the only journalist that does!

almost no one in my mind is more worthy!

journos out there, one that will stand out from the LTTE campaigns from the right-wingers. And shows Helen that her battles are not going w/out notice. The lady has damn well earned them!

Donated (down to my last $3.00 in the acct now) - & will do some more on Monday. Any idea how late Monday we can kick in?

Thanks for organizing this, helderheid! :yourock: I love Helen! She's a wonderful example of all us 'Aunt Bea' elders, kicking ass & taking names!

I will definitely be able to do more on Monday, this feeds my soul as much as it will nourish Helen's!

BlackVelvet's poem from below (I'm sending this to a few people I know, it's lovely!) -

If your fortune be bereft
and in your cupboard but two loaves,
Sell one loaf and with the gold,
buy hyacinths to feed the soul.

69.  I make regular donations to charitable causes and Katrina
relief is only one that I've sent money to over the years. I've admired Helen Thomas for years for her tenacity and her willingness to ask the hard questions of all of our Presidents, Republican and Democratic alike. If I want to send a few dollars in a gesture to thank her for asking a question that we have all wanted to ask, I don't feel like I have neglected other important causes.

28. I agree . . . I think that a dozen dozen would be fine, but . . .
anything beyond that should be in the form of a check that she can donate to her favorite charity . . . extravagance for the sake of extravagance is both wasteful and silly, imo . . .

to a cause near and dear to Helen. Or the VA hospital as someone above suggested. I'm certain Helen would approve of that.

128. OK. I know everyone's intentions are great, just
want to make sure we are using our fundraising powers to the max. Helen will be overwhelmed and I imagine she'll be slightly embarrassed by the excessiveness of it all.

Let's just note it for the next time around.

Thanks for all your help with this effort Heldereid.

As her work address. I cannot imagine her work being too far from a Starbucks she visits every morning.

Hope this helps.

Five Minutes With: Helen Thomas

<snippage>

So what news outlets do you rely on? Do you use the internet much?

Well, I read my email with trepidation—”you’re ugly, you’re awful, you should retire”—and I write back "You must be living a dull life if you insist on living mine!" And on it goes. Every day I go to the Starbucks near the White House and read the Washington Post, New York Times. That’s indispensable, I think. That’s your homework. And then when I walk into the office I turn on CNN and keep it on. I think they’ve lost a lot of ground. They were magnificent when they started, but trying to emulate Fox is a joke. So I hope they’ll get back their high standards.

79. My suggestion - have the florist call
A single person calling about a "delivery" for Helen Thomas could be construed as a threat. You know what I mean.

Organic Bouquet seems quite enthralled with this order.

The next time I need to send flowers, I'm definitely using Organic Bouquet - and I'm in charge of sending flowers at my office.

As far as National Press Releases go, I'll get back to you . .

I was just thinking that it would be great for all the WH press to see this.

They need to see that the American people appreciate journalists willing to stand up to these monsters and question their agenda. They need to know that we will support them if they will only take a stand.

I love Helen, and I think that by speaking truth to power she is helping us expose the real motives of fearless leader. That, too, is a worthy cause.

location, and a request to her personal assistant(if she has one) to alert in-house cameras & reporters - ( in secret) - to cover the en masse( so magnificent!! ) Roses Galore delivery - when they arrive for Helen- and all of it to be picked up by UP/AP news services etc.etc.:)))

Even if no-one covers it, at least it's one way to get the message to them that a lot of people want to see reporters show some balls.

For those of you who chose to donate via e-check, the funds won't clear until the 29th according to paypal. Shall I "cover" the uncleared checks with my own funds and reimburse myself once they clear or should we wait until they clear before ordering or should I refund the checks and have you redonate with instant funding?

What about after a pile of roses, $$$ goes to a scholarship at a DC college or university for journalism students wanting to get into political reporting. Named in her honor, now that would leave a legacy! And we sure need some REAL journalists in the beltway -- Helen is about the last one standing.

146. In addition to thanking her for discussing PNAC,
it might be nice to start by thanking her in general for continuing to uphold the principle, while the rest of the press was in its post-9/11 coma, that the health of our country requires a free press that aggressively questions and investigates the government in order to safeguard the public against abuses of power.

162. In a very important sense, she's the only one of the WH press
corps who didn't abandon her post in a time of national emergency.

And you can quote me on that. :)

I didn't think it was an issue since the link is already in this thread to donate, and that address pops right up when you click the button. I'll see if I can get a mod to remove it.

165. Totally awesome! Can someone at her office send DU a photo?

I would just love to see her face on the Home page at DU with all those Roses!

I think it is just so wonderful of you to do this because she is really an unsung hero.

For all these years, she has gone to work and done her job as an HONEST person.

what a difference from the Bush Crooks.

169. There is something unseemly about this.
She is a journalist and was doing her job. She does not deserve anything for that. Sending her roses makes it look like she is being paid off. I don't like it. Give her a plack when she retires.

170. FYI
The 1850 K Street address is correct.

Helen Thomas and my father were good friends and colleagues,
both members of a generation of the Washington press whose
younger generation has lost its way, its principles or both.

I donated $50, although I agree with some posters here that it
is getting to be overkill. I also had The Freedom Toast send her
up a set of their CDs, as Helen has worked on the music committee
of the Gridiron Club of Washington.

I have to wonder just what it is that they teach in places like
Columbia's School of Journalism these days. Surely not to sell
yourself out to the highest bidder?
