Do you know who has delivered the best smack down of the far right so far?
Jimmy Carter. If you haven't read his book, Our Endangered Values, you really should pick up a copy. For me, this will be one of those "set a book free" books when it comes out in paperback. It is the most sober, deliberate and rational condemnation of the religious and political far right I have yet to run across. He pulls no punches and flat out states the U.S. Supreme Court elected GWBush in a partisan vote. Go Jimmy!

1. Thanks for the tip. I respect Jimmy Carter and will get the book.
I hate to tell you though that the FBI says you can't be a pacifist patriot.

Peace,

freefall

6. Oh there are a great number of people who have done excellent...
I just personally have been blown away with the comprehensive and soft-spoken treatment given by Jimmy Carter.

5. And...Jimmy Carter is an Evangelical Christian...
who ALSO taught a Sunday School class in Washington DC WHILE he was President....so he KNOWS what he is talking about.

Can you picture Bush teaching/leading a church class in Washington DC?

8. I think that is one thing that makes the book so powerful.
I knows of what he speaks. And damn the gap between those two men is simply unbridgable.

12. I've been to his Sunday School class in Plains
And stayed for the service afterwards. It shows me just what the fundies don't understand. President Carter's church truly believes and teaches the tolerance and love that Christ taught for your fellow man. I don't consider myself to be a religious person, or even a spiritual person, but if all churches and supposed Christians were like this, I'd have no problem with them and would probably go because the people of his church "get it."

Then you get to have your picture taken with him. I love JC and I'm actually touching his back :)

7. I have read it and completely agree
His take on the rise of fundamentalisn, both abroad and here, is spot on. As stated, he pulls absolutely no punches in sticking it to the current administration in a truly educated way.

Damn I love that man!!!!!!!!!

10. Carter's sincerity comes thru his words.
It is so clearly written. He gets to his point immediately; doesn't overuse language. If all political books were written this clearly, I could read 3 a week.

13. ..and stem cell research?
I haven't read his book, but I think he mentioned on Larry King that he strongly supports stem cell research, too. (According to him that is a very Christian thing to do...quite the opposite of what Bush believes.)

Are Carter's views about stem cell research in his book?

17. Kevin Phillips "American Theocracy" might be even better.

Listen to him speak here

I will have to read both as soon as I finish "A People's History of the United States." This book reminds us that we must always fight against the theocrats and corporatist to preserve our freedom.
