attempt to repeal the 19th amendment (women's suffrage)
I found this in a discussion at

http://www.talk2action.com

http://fathers.ourfamily.com/19th.htm

(many links in original)

The Nineteenth Amendment caused government spending to skyrocket, which converted the United States, its Constitution, and its Bill of Rights, into a totalitarian state. Professor John Lott of the Law School University of Chicago proved statistically that it was women's suffrage, and nothing else, which caused this unbridled government growth. Spending too much for government destroyed private property rights, plunged the US into huge debts and destroyed Personal Savings. Professor Lott demonstrated that the reason the increase in federal expenditures resulting from the First World War didn't return to its previous historic level was due solely to the passage of the Nineteenth Amendment in 1921. This unbridled government growth is why one third of the men in the world who are behind bars are American men, why an American man is 1,000 times more likely than a Japanese or an Italian or a Greek man to be convicted of rape, why more Americans per capita are incarcerated for just drinking and driving than Japanese are for all crimes combined even though a non-drinking woman driver is five times more likely to have a fatal accident than a drinking man driver, why existing adultery and sodomy laws are not upheld, and why the US is the only industrialized nation with a negative Personal Savings rate.

Until the Nineteenth Amendment is repealed, Christian women are invited to sign the following proxy statement, file it with their local county recorder, and fax the signed statement to 866 721 5995:

"I, as a submissive woman of God, and of sound mind, do hereby give my vote to this man of God: __________________ to exercise for the glory of Yahvh, our Creator. I make this statement publickly as an example for other godly women to emulate, and for the edification of the world through which we are passing.

I make this statement bona fide dei gratia, for Christ Jesus my Lord. Amen."

25. I suggest you take it VERY seriously. This is what has been unleashed...
on America by Bush, the Republican (fascist) Party and the corporations they serve. Here is but one link of truly terrifying documentation:

http://www.motherjones.com/toc/2005/12/index.html

If this is not sufficient, I could refer you to at least a half-dozen more such links, with prime sources including Harpers, The Nation, The Guardian and The New York Times.

These would-be tyrants -- these militant Christian Fundamentalists -- are the most dire threat to liberty on our nation's history. They are lavishly financed by the corporate ruling class (which supports theocracy whether Christian or Islamic as the ultimate mechanism of social control), and with the appointment of Alito they now have TOTAL control of the federal government.

We dismiss at them -- just as European liberals and leftists dismissed Hitler -- at our own mortal risk.

30. There are far more of us (sane people) than there are of them
(the crazy Fundies). The group is so very VERY far outside the mainstream that I have to laugh. I do not believe they will take over. I just cannot see modern-day women who have the ability to think being willing to sign something like this "contract". I also think that there are plenty of people who strongly believe in the separation of church and state, and who will fight back (I am one of them). I'm not saying that these whacko's aren't trying to make things the way they think they should be -- turning this country into a theocracy, one religion (theirs) for all, etc. I just don't think they are going to succeed. I'm also not saying we should not pay attention to them; we should. But seriously, they are so far out on the edge that I don't think most people would follow them off the cliff.

However, what I do take seriously are the not-so-whacked-out righties who have been, and still are, causing great harm to this country. I'd rather work to stop the not-so-out-there things and people before the path opens wide for the really-out-there folks. It's sort of like treating cancer before it gets to the end-stage.

37. Then I would ask, are they doing something to fight back?
I am absolutely not diminishing what has happened in South Dakota. It's disgusting, it's obscene, and it's immoral. But surely there are things that the residents there (and not just the women, but men who believe a woman should have access to a safe, legal, abortion) can do to fight back. File suit. Vote out the bastards that passed this law. Protest. Speak up. Speak out. Don't just sit back and let them have their way. (And please don't take this as implying that no one in South Dakota is fighting this assinine law. I'm just saying that just because something is made law, that doesn't mean it can't be changed.)

Oh, and while I made the choice long ago to not have any more children, access to safe and legal abortions is an issue that still burns hot in me, and I do what I can do to try and keep it that way.)

103. And rigged, I might add, by the very same Reconstructionists
who SeattleGirl doesn't want to take seriously.

Christian Reconstructionists. They're the folks who want to see "Biblical Law" (Leviticus) instated here in the U.S. They want to be able to stone adulterers (and adulteresses, of course! Yum, yum!) and disobedient youths to death. Oh, homosexuals too.

Wake up, SeattleGirl. Quick, while it may yet still matter.

assumptions about me based on one post. Please read some of the things I posted above in this thread. I laugh at Bush (when I'm not cringing), as do a lot of people. But I don't take him, or the things he does, lightly at all.

There are other people who are also laughing at this "professor" and the "contract" posting in this thread, yet I seem to have been elected to receive most of the disparaging remarks. Perhaps it is because I was the first person to respond to the OP; I don't know.

Because I laughed, you, and other people, have assumed I'm, what? An empty-headed bimbo? An idiot? Stupid? Ignorant? I am none of those things. I've said this before, and I'll say it again: You do not know me. You do not know anything about my political activism. You do not know how closely I watch what is going on in this country, INCLUDING what the fundie wing-nuts are doing. Just because I laugh at the absurdity of some of the things they do doesn't mean I'm not paying attention.

I do not judge you based on one post. It would be nice if you would extend the same courtesy to me.

112. Somrtimes I think the best thing to do is to laugh at them
rather than get all up in arms. The people that are driving the kind of stupidity that has seized the country deserve no less.

Laugh at them. They're stupid clowns. They're laughable buffoons by their nature, and we would be much better if we all realized that, rather than doing them the honor of taking them seriously. Hell, we can't argue with them-they ignore facts as being wrong unless a fact supports their argument.

Laugh at them. Hard. In their face. Point at them and scream "Look at the stupid idiot!" as often as you can. Humiliation is a far more effective weapon.

SeattleGirl, I got your back.

No one should be under any dilusion that the 19th amendment is going anywhere. Women voters now outnumber men and they'll never give up that right. The ones who WOULD give up that right, wouldn't do so in the form of a fucking VOTE (which would never be proposed to begin with) The original post, therefore, in my opinion, if fucking funny.

134. If it's a pattern, then you really have to take a look at your own
behavior which keeps eliciting that response, don't you think?

Look, your comment was that you couldn't take this seriously, and I'm saying you'd darn well better because these people are real, and they're serious as heart attacks.

Instead of actually paying attention about the subject (and taking it seriously!) you have to personalize my comments and take them way beyond what was being discussed. I wasn't commenting on whether or not you take the Bushies seriously (I assume you wouldn't be here if you didn't), but rather the Christian Reconstructionists and their close allies.

I would further say this: I wouldn't DREAM of telling someone not to judge me on the basis of one post. What you write is all we know of you. I don't recall ever SEEING anything else you've ever written. Yet I'm supposed to go looking for a whole body of work before I take your very own words at face value and seriously?

Because I laughed, you, and other people, have assumed I'm, what? An empty-headed bimbo? An idiot? Stupid? Ignorant? I am none of those things.

Okay, I'm glad to take your word for that. But I'll tell you this: Yes. Your response to the OP made you sound at best young, naive and/or flighty, and at worst, NOT young, naive and/or flighty. If you don't want to be seen that way, don't present yourself that way.

Edited on Tue Mar-21-06 07:31 PM by pabsungenis
My uncle Bob, the Catholic Apologist, believes this. From Wikipedia:

In early 2002, Robert Sungenis came under much criticism for publicly postulating a geocentric worldview. This view is akin to the Tychonic system worldview, which holds that the universe was created with earth at its center, a view that is in direct conflict with the scientific explanations of physics and astronomy since the seventeenth century. Robert Sungenis bases much of his argument on the testimony of the early Church Fathers especially in relation to their interpretation of Scripture and the authoritative declarations of three popes of the Catholic Church, Paul V, Urban VIII, Alexander VII. Robert Sungenis does not claim these decrees met the level defined in Vatican I required for papal infallibility, but should be considered binding on the conscience of the faithful. This modern geocentrism is to be the focus of the upcoming book Gaileo Was Wrong (due out 2006) authored by Robert Sungenis and Dr. Robert Bennett.

On his web site he announced a challenge to pay $1000 for proof that the Earth revolves around the sun, while restating his proof, via scripture, that the Earth is the center of the universe. However, the terms for disproving their geocentric worldview included the statement that "CAI will be the sole judge of whether you have successfully proven your case."

91. You seem to be making assumptions about me based on
one thing and one thing only: one post I made.

You don't know me. You don't know what I do in terms of political activism. You don't know how closely I pay attention to things. So, I reject your judgment of me. Why do you assume I am ignoring the nut-bars? Because I laughed at what was in the original post? Does that make you think that I don't give a flying fig about what is going on in this country? If that is what your assumption is, I can assure you, you are quite mistaken. I just don't think that wailing, gnashing my teeth, and beating my chest all the time is very productive. Am I angry about what is happening in this country? Absolutely. But sometimes I just have to laugh at the absurdity of it all. Laughing is rejuvenating. If I didn't laugh, I'd walk around in a perpetual state of rage, and that's not very productive either.

I am well aware that the wacko-fundies are trying to take over the country. I'm fighting against that by speaking out, by planting my boot in my Senator's arse's when necessary, by adding my voice and my name to others via petitions, letters, etc. What are you doing? I'm not implying you are doing nothing; I would really like to know how you are fighting this, and the other issues that are threatening this country. Perhaps you are doing something that I had not thought of, that I could also do.

I will tell you this, though. I am not going to stop laughing. And, I am not going to stop fighting.

127. Relax, it was an off-hand comment on your apparent unconcern
for these freaks.

There was no judgment of your concern, your efforts, nor was there any implication that anything is/was your fault. I merely pointed out that what is so ridiculous it seems comical today, has a way of becoming reality, especially where religion is involved, if we don't take it seriously.

It is a discussion board, I believe.

135. Methinks the lady doth protest too much
See my previous post.

Laughter can also be an immature coping mechanism. I'd forgotten about that until I saw your continued defense of words you now want to somehow disavow or render meaningless because they weren't taken in context of your whole body of work here at DU. (That ain't gonna fly, btw.) Jokes and a silly demeanor can be used when the jokester just isn't comfortable facing reality. Jokes and silliness deflect it, distract others from pursuing those lines of uncomfortalbe thought. Not saying this is true in your case, I don't know.

Nor is anyone "judging you" based on a single post. We're challenging the ATTITUDE (thoughts) expressed in that ONE POST. If you don't want your ideas and attitudes taken at face value post-by-post and challenged on that basis then you probably need to find some other way (or place) to express them.

Mother of four when she moved away three years ago, now 43 and mother of six. Had her daughters already prepared to subjegate themselves to their masters i.e. husbands. We actually had the discussion about the voting rights of women; she didn't see why women need a vote when they have husbands to vote for them. BTW, this woman was college-educated and had a thriving reconstructive dental practice. She didn't seem to see the disconnect between her beliefs and the life she led. I sure felt sorry for the kids.

One of the first things I re-thought when I was a fundy was the issue of women's rights. I tried to talk to a fundy girlfriend of mine about our rights once I got my mind around the idea we should have them and she freaked out about it. Her father was a grade A "Asshole" much like my father.

It seemed to me (still does) that men aren't any smarter than I am. In fact, most of the ones I know are a helluva lot dumber (no offense, DU guys; I'm talking about right-wingers and fundies). I can think of only a couple of men whose intelligence I respect. That's pretty sad. I need to move someplace where there are smart men who are interested in learning and bettering themselves. The men here mostly think everything should be handed to them on a silver platter...and talk about DUMB. :eyes:

49. Yeah, that's real fucking funny, isn't it?
Real women read DU every day. Real women read words that dismiss our very worth and humanity every day. Real women know that we are not human to some people and that some people are working really hard to force us to submit to their world view. Posts like this seem to be little more than another slap in the face of women as if it's funny and something to joke about.

I know for myself that I don't need more confirmation that there are people in this world who don't think I'm a real human being just because I'm a woman. But I'm sick to my soul at constantly having to read this hateful words, constantly having my humanity used to have a good laugh about what kind of hateful freaks exist in the world I live in.

Of course I suspect I'll get the rote answer, "if you don't like it, don't read it". All I'm hoping to accomplish with this post is to make people aware of how it feels to be a woman reading these hateful words day after day after day and maybe have us take them seriously and discuss what we can actually DO about it. Otherwise, what's the point of posting it if not to just stick our noses in it again and again and again?

Well, I did read a debate once at FweeWepubwik arguing that the 13th Amendment was illegal since the former Confederate states were not allowed to vote on ratification. All carefully research from magazine articles from the early 1950's.

What was it then? Part of the Union? Tennessee served as the last state needed to put women's suffrage over the top, and the last MAN to vote did so because his MOTHER had written him a letter asking him "to do the right thing."

The Petition to Repeal The 19th Amendment
Is the The Petition to Repeal The 19th Amendment for real or a hoax?

by Joan Bokaer on Mon Mar 20, 2006 at 04:37:05 PM EST

Unfortunately, it's real
I'm afraid it's quite real--admittedly, though, the site hosting aforementioned petition is a site promoting Christian Identity (up to and including promoting Holocaust revisionism and even proposing shipping every African-American out of the country). (As a note, the original petition drive may have started among the part of the dominionist community with close links to racists but has since spread.)

But yes, there's actually a movement to literally disenfranchise women (as in a de-suffrage movement):

--Talk forum calls for revoking 19th Amendment in context of abortion
--early attempts to challenge validity of 19th Amendment (similar examples are used by "tax protesters" in the "Christian militia" movement)
--report from feminist group on how movement to repeal 19th Amendment is being promoted by "father's rights" groups supported in dominionist community
--a secondary copy of the petition to repeal the 19th Amendment, dating from the late 1990's
--dominionist site essentially claiming that early advocates of Suffrage were devil worshippers (actually spiritualists, but spiritualism is explicitly equated with Satanism in most dominionist groups)
--article detailing history of "Father's Manifesto" (aka the petition) and its links to racist groups
--more info from a watchdog group which includes archives of the mailinglist for the writer of the "Father's Manifesto" (who is, as it turns out, active in dominionist groups including Promise Keepers)
--further posts by group which include threats against judges

Lest one think this opinion is a fringe opinion even among dominionists, several groups have not only stated husbands should tell their wives how to vote but--in the notable case of a dominionist "parent's ministry" operated by the Pearls that is now linked to the literal "death by chastening rod" of a child and the possible maiming of another--they have even flat out told a woman writing to their advice column that it is her husband's decision, not hers, whether she is to go on birth control.

Interestingly, at least one woman in public office who is known to be very friendly towards dominionist causes has claimed women should have their right to vote removed--a platform that would, ironically, leave her out of a job.

And no less than the Southern Baptist Convention has officially issued statements for women to "submit" to their husbands and their judgements; other groups more firmly into "dominion theology" tend to be worse with women literally having little say over anything.

by dogemperor on Mon Mar 20, 2006 at 06:50:16 PM EST

(this post links to the various sites promoting the ideas)

Let's hold hands.....
In solidarity :
It is incumbent upon we few on this forum to draw this unavoidable conclusion - the war against abortion rights is the war against birth control is the war on the right of women to vote is the war against Democracy is the war against the Enlightenment is the war against science, modernity, and against human reason itself - whether that is God given or not.

Period.

45. super sick site that supports this
http://christianparty.net/mf.htm

A small sample of 'facts' they cite to support this position:

....

Women voters subsidize single-mother households even though children in Mother-only Households are three times more likely to be fatally abused than in Father-only Households and even though the mothers' involvement decreases the likelihood of students' getting mostly 'A's by 32% and the fathers' involvement doubles it. (Single-mother households vs. single-father households)

Women voters demand more female pilots even though women pilots are four times more likely to crash than men pilots.

Women voters demand DUI laws which discriminate against men even though women drivers are two times more likely than men to have a fatal or injury accident.

Women voters pass numerous laws which intentionally and systematically discriminate against men and fathers.

Women voters pass tax laws which enable women as a group to pay zero percent of federal taxes.

Women voters demand "gender equality" in the workforce even though zero percent of American 12th grade girls correctly answered TIMSS math and physics questions.

Women voters pass laws reducing male college admissions to only 40% even though 98.5% of the top fiftieth percentile of GRE test takers are men.

Women voters implement affirmative action for women even though the negative contribution of one female employee in the workforce is equivalent to the positive contribution of 14 male employees and GDP per Capita decreases $2,450 for each one percent increase in the percent of the workforce which is women.

much more....

(original has links supposedly supporting these claims)

47. Why are so many of you surprised?
Edited on Tue Mar-21-06 07:10 AM by theHandpuppet
During door-to-door voter registration drives I've run into many households like this, both in Virginia and West Virginia. Usually, in these instances if I was talking to the woman of the house, she would say, "I let my husband for for me" or "My husband votes for our house". But if there was a couple at home sometimes the woman didn't even get to speak. One Virginia man said, "I don't allow my woman to vote." Seeing as the woman was standing mute behind him, gripping the door jamb to the kitchen and looking like a bedraggled prisoner, I'm not surprised. Such encounters were not at all an uncommon experience.

If some of you really think a movement to get fundamentalist Christian women away from the ballot box is fantasy, think again. It won't even take the repeal of the 19th Amendment. All it takes are thousands of fundie preachers brainwashing millions of fundie households and entire elections could be assured for the GOP.

You can root out/circumvent voting machines but you can't do much about men and women who are being brainwashed in the name of the Lord. That's what the evangelical, neocon movement is counting on.

Reproductive choice today, our votes tomorrow. Women are in the crosshairs.

I ran across some more and was truly surprised that there are still women out there like this... just have no words.

The key is in the empowerment of girls, to encourage girls from birth to value their worth as individuals. But too many girls are raised from birth to believe they are nothing without a man.

Women like me grew up "empowered" only to find ourselves living in a world where only we were taught we could do anything. It didn't work. Boys need to be taught the same thing so that they change their expectations.

Seriously, women in these homes where the men tell them how to vote are only half of the equation. The men who are telling them are the other half.

66. John Lott was with the Univ. of Chicago Law School, but not anymore...
Now he's a "resident scholar" at ...wait for it... the American Enterprise Institute!

Yes, Neocon Central!

http://www.aei.org/scholars/scholarID.38/scholar.asp

"Lott studies crime, antitrust, education, gun control, campaign finance, and voting and legislative behavior. He is the author of More Guns, Less Crime: Understanding Crime and Gun Control Laws. "

Read here for "John Lott’s unethical conduct"
http://timlambert.org/lott
John Lott is embroiled in several controversial affairs:

*****he almost certainly fabricated a mysterious survey and certainly behaved unethically in making claims for which he had no supporting data
*****he presented results purporting to show that “more guns” led to “less crime” when those results were the product of coding errors
*****he pretended to be a woman called “Mary Rosh” on the internet in order to praise his own research and accuse his critics of fraud.
*****he probably was the person who anonymously accused Steve Levitt of being “rabidly antigun”

(lots more)

Edited on Tue Mar-21-06 04:58 PM by bloom
Just the sort of people that Cspan, etc. gives a platform to.

"Lott is also a staunch gun-rights advocate and the author of the book More Guns, Less Crime: Understanding Crime and Gun-Control Laws (University of Chicago Press, 1998), which relies on disputed research. Lott's study, which is based on his survey of more than 2,000 households, indicated that guns are used for self-defense several million times each year.

...But as the January 23, 2003, Washington Times article noted, "Lott cited no source for that statistic in the first edition of More Guns, Less Crime," and after questions were raised, "in the second edition he wrote that he had conducted his own survey."

When questions were raised on Internet weblogs as to the source and validity of Lott's claims, Lott created "Mary Rosh" -- a supposed female former student of Lott's -- to defend him. According to an article in the December 2003 issue of Washington Monthly, "Someone named 'Mary Rosh' started turning up on Web sites where Lott's work was being discussed, claiming to be a former student of the embattled academic and defending him vigorously. Some Web loggers investigated and couldn't find any student of his by that name. Eventually, Lott admitted that he himself was 'Mary Rosh.'"

Lott also embellished his credentials while testifying before the Judiciary committee of the Nebraska Legislature in 1997, referring to himself as "a professor at the University of Chicago Law School" when he was actually "a law and economics fellow," according to his American Enterprise Institute biography. The highest teaching title he has earned is assistant professor at the Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania."

73. Spending went up after 1917 b/c the West was competing with Moscow
Western governments had to throw some bones to their populations to prevent a worldwide revolution to some form of communism. That was a real fear: the Russian revolution sent shockwaves through the West.

Now that communism is "destroyed", the dismantling of government programs and formerly progressive laws is the next step.

I don't see Catholic women, Presbyterian women, Luteran women, Jewish women, and Muslim women buying into this, even if they vote conservative. Then, we've got the whole group of women like those here at DU.

I think this is doomed to be a non-starter.

87. It sounds like post hoc reasoning (because it is)
Edited on Tue Mar-21-06 04:28 PM by Jack Rabbit

The Nineteenth Amendment caused government spending to skyrocket, which converted the United States, its Constitution, and its Bill of Rights, into a totalitarian state.

And this little tidbit:

Until the Nineteenth Amendment is repealed, Christian women are invited to sign the following proxy statement, file it with their local county recorder, and fax the signed statement to 866 721 5995

I didn't know that had fax machines before 1920, did you? Wow, that's news to me.

If a woman wants to sign such a statement and put it on record with her church or any place else, there is nothing in the Nineteeth Amendment to prevent that.

Seriously...it's got the funniest juxtaposition of phrases I've seen in ages: "...as a submissive woman of God, and of sound mind..."

Cognitive Dissonance Overload Alert!

It gets even funnier if you follow the link. Here are some disjointed "arguments" in support of repeal:

"Only 12% of men and 9% of women support such "liberal" concepts as the Nineteenth Amendment."

Oh yeah? Prove it!

"American 12th grade girls demonstrate zero percent knowledge of physics."

Hmmm...and even if that Were True, (which I Seriously Doubt -- certainly SOME 12th grade girls are potentially ignorant of physics, but certainly NOT All) just WHAT Does THAT Have to do with voting?
