Poll question: Sending my teen to "boot camp" gives them permission to hit/kick him?
I thought part of boot camp was yelling, imposing physical "punishments" in excess of what participant thinks is possible, but NOT kicking, hitting, punching, physically touching the participant. Is a private run boot camp allowed to do this when public/military ones aren't or what? I am curious, am trying to make sense of this.

1. NO, but. read the fine print. Some parents sign rights away.
some allow punishment as seen fit by the camp.

4. That is my question since I've never seen this in any camp info
that I've sent my child to. I didn't know if they could sign away physical punishment rights.

5. "discipline" can cover a lot of ground.
Can you sign away your child's right to have corporal punishment?

6. In AR...
Corporal punishment is still administered in the public schools, without parental consent...

I went to the school and talked to the ass't principle, and advised him that no one will touch my kids but my wife or myself. I was told that it didn't matter what I wanted.

I told them that I would have every one of their asses in court if it did happen.

None of them were touched.

7. I didn't know that it was legal in any states.
This is just wrong. Good that they listened to you.

9. They practice corp punishment in
SW Missouri too. I am a sub teacher for McDonald County. My first sub job, was for a 4th grade class, and there were two boys giving me grief all day, and I sent them to the principals office. About ten minutes later, they come back to class crying. I was like, ? Why are you crying, and they both say "we got spanked"

I was totally taken aback, i was like, they still practice corp punishment here? All the kids in unison, said YES. I was taken back into the damn past with that one, and I felt like a total heel for sending the kids down there. If i knew they still practiced corp punishment, i wouldn't have sent those poor kids down there. BTW, i'm from SE Alaska, and my school district back home stopped corp punishment when i was in the 3rd grade, which is..roughly,1986, 1985....

... But I know for a fact that in the Army it is illegal for a Trainee to be assaulted. That includes the training cadre. They are forbidden from any type of personal physical contact of that nature.

Now that is not to say that with what they can have you do, you might want to take a punch and get it over with... but they can not touch... Big no, no.

8. That is the Boot in Boot Camp. But Surely a Contract Cannot Absolve Them…
…from criminal liability if they are engaging in child abuse.

10. Is this in response to that
kid who got the shit kicked out of him, and later died, like a month or so ago? If it is, i remember them showing that on the network news, and I was very upset seeing that, and then seeing the camp leader dude trying to justify the beating...i was very pissed off....

17. yes, it is. Boot camp was court ordered after trouble
sounds like the kid messed up, violated parole that he'd been on for joyriding/stealing a car with friends. 6 month boot camp ordered but he ended up dead after being beat. First "there were no bruises" consistent with a beating and he died from internal bleeding related to sickle cell anemia. Then the video came out, story has changed to he was killed by boot camp people. In the first stories they talk about another couple black teens who have been killed in Florida boot camps, but Jeb said it wasn't enough yet to close the camps or investigate further.

I didn't know corporal punishment was allowed in public schools or private camps but am finding out different here.

21. It's a terrible story, and doubly worse
since the goal (I hope) of these places is to help turn around young people's lives from bad to better. What an awful irony.
:(

11. er, i believe the court sent the teen to boot camp
Edited on Sat Mar-18-06 05:07 PM by pitohui
i'm not aware that a parent can unilaterally decide a kid must go to boot camp, which is for juvenile delinquents you know

if the parent wants to pay someone to abuse her child she has to send them out of the country, such as to military style camps in jamaica

and no i don't think abuse of ANY prisoner, teen or adult, should be legal or winked at

12. Sorry if I'm missing something here, but...
Why does someone using an Orwell avitar send their child to any stripe of rule-crazy "boot camp" only to end up wondering how a bunch of sadistic dickheads are in charge of bullying the kids?

14. My thoughts exactly, you sent your kid to a private "boot camp"
and expected him not to be abused??? That's what boot camp is, abuse. They "break you all the way down and rebuild you"in what their image of a man or woman is.

13. Hitting still goes on in USMC bootcamp
it's still part of the indoctrination (At least as of early 2000) and very rarely would the recruit think of reporting the incident as abuse. Not that I think the "Code of Silence" is the correct course of action.

forbidden.

19. Hazing is illegal in most states too, yet...
There are evil little fuckwits, male and female, in every imaginable "group" on every school campus who insist on humiliation, violence, and sometimes even sexual abuse, in order to have their "fun" while simultaneously indoctrinating the newbies into their group's favored "values." School administrators know it happens, parents do too, yet the sadists often get away with it - if the schools can cover it up, I'm more than certain the military can.
