Sophie Scholl - I saw the movie last night.
There were a few dozen people on opening night in one of only 4 theaters in which it was playing in the entire state of NY. We had someone get there VERY early because we were concerned we wouldn't be able to get a seat. I sat with muscles clenched, wringing my hands for two hours and tears streamed down my cheeks at the end. It was a powerful and incredible movie about an amazing group of students - the White Rose. I haven't been able to shake the impact and don't really care to. But I am still so sad about how poor a turn-out I saw. I know subtitled foreign films are not wildly popular - but I really thought that given the state of the world - that by sheer word-of-mouth - there should have been crowds.

To locate one of the limited engagement theaters where it is playing now see: http://www.sophieschollmovie.com/

The New Yorker's review: http://www.newyorker.com/critics/cinema/?060227crci_cinema

Find a theater and take friends. 6 of us went and we sat and talked for hours afterward at a late night dinner where no one had much appetite.

1. II saw it at Kendall Sq in Cambridge, MA last week
the theater was small and there were about 20 people total in the theater, it was a weekday afternoon first showing of the day at 1:30pm. I drove from southeastern CT specifically to see this movie.

Not many people I know are aware of this film except informed people. I waited for it for quite some time. It was worth it, i thought. I also read several books on the topic beforehand.

 :hi:

2. Until your review, I had never heard of Sophie or this movie.
It does sound like it could be too close for comfort.
Thanks for enlightening me. :(

10. Google "White Rose Society"
You'll find plenty of background info on Sophie and the other young people involved in the resistance to the Nazis.

I regret that the movie will be coming nowhere near my little corner of WV. Those of you who have the chance to see this film, DO.

3. Based on transcripts of actual Nazi trial of German student protestors
I hope some overeager moderator doesn't move this thread to "The Lounge", because this film is a powerful political statement of a real-life trial. As such it is not Lounge fodder! Some moderators seem to think anything referring to a film is too lightweight to belong to any forum other than the Lounge.

Here's the first paragraph of the review from The New Yorker (link in original post above). Please read the entire review to see how facism responds to dissent and the notion of free speech. As Sandra Day O'Connor pointed out, we don't want to be on even the first steps of the path to facism.

The new German movie “Sophie Scholl: The Final Days” is as plain as its title. The film follows the last six days in the life of Scholl (Julia Jentsch), who, with her brother, Hans (Fabian Hinrichs), and a friend, Christoph Probst (Florian Stetter), was executed by the Nazis in 1943. All three were members of the White Rose, a student resistance movement at Munich University. Sophie went there in May of 1942 to study biology and philosophy; Hans, a medical student, had enrolled in 1939. Both were ardent Christians. Early in the film, they take a suitcase of leaflets protesting Hitler’s regime and the prolongation of the war to the Munich campus and leave them outside the lecture halls, to be picked up by students. One pile sits on a high balustrade; without warning, Sophie sweeps it into the air, so that the words of the White Rose sail down through the stairwell like snow.

5. Put Sophie Scholl in
in my Netflix queue several weeks ago because I don't think it will come here. If it does make it, the engagement will be short, in and out of town in a matter of days. DVD release date is unknown, of course.

7. I've been waiting for it to open locally
only to find out that I won't be home when it does. Be thankful you got the chance to see it. I'll probably have to pry open my wallet and buy a copy, but I expect I'll want to watch it more than once. Since there was so little press promoting the movie, it is up to us to spread the word. We are now the new White Rose.

8. Subtitles Not Popular???? Nonsense
Its not that subtitled films are not popular, its a matter of a population that can not read with sufficient ability to keep up with normal conversation - even if it is abbreviated.

9. Thanks for the "heads-up"
I'm going to see it this weekend...
I first heard of the Sophie Sholl on Mike Malloy's radio show. He referenced the site where the archives of his show were and where you can find links to information about Sophie Scholl, The White Rose Society and the leaflets they distributed. Powerful reading indeed

11. I did the play "White Rose" years ago.
It was an emotionally exhausting play because we always felt the spirit of those young people whose courage should never be forgotten. I look forward to seeing the movie.

13. I've always thought Americans should know more about the White Rose kids
I first read about them years ago, while doing research for a novel involving Nazi Germany. Their story filled me with admiration and pity, and it has that effect every time I read about them again.
