I just received a response from the FBI about my FOIA request.
This arrived in an official FBI envelope, that looked like it had been hand addressed by a 3rd grader. Here it is.

Dear requester:

This is in response to your Freedom of Information-Privacy Act letter requesting copies of FBI records concerning yourself.

While your letter contains sufficient information to conduct an accurate search of the central records at FBI Headquarters, an original legible signature is required.

Please re-sign your letter under the perjury statement (blue ink is preferable) and mail to FBI, Room 6359 Record Dissemination Section, 935 Pennsylvania Ave. N.W., Washington D.C. 20535

Upon receipt of your original signature, we will conduct a search and advise you of the results.

We regret any inconvenience you may have incurred in this matter.

Sincerely,
(snip) end

1. I will say that some people do have terrible handwriting
If I ever address anything I'd be lucky if people took me for a third grader (hence I type everything that can be typed).

4. I think the key word was "original" legible signature.
The instructions said to mail or fax the request. I faxed it, therefore the signature wasn't original.

If they want legible, I can't read my own handwriting. I think they just want you to keep jumping through hoops to make it more difficult.

3. "original legible signature"
I guess I will never be able to get my records then. My signature may be distinct but it is definitely not particularly legible. What a crock....

5. If my signature was legible, then it wouldn't be MY signature
Many people do not have a "legible" signature, but it is their official signature.

7. How did you start the process?
I'm wondering what you expect to find, if anything? Would they have to tell you "everything" they have on you? Does the request only pertain to the FBI piece? If they had some sort of file on you regarding internet postings, would they have to disclose it?

I'm curious what would be in mine. I'm wondering if my history would start with my military application? If I remember correctly, they did a back-ground check on me when I applied for Marine Corps OCS/PLC.

:hi:

9. You can start it here
http://www.foiarequest.org/

It's a site set up by PFAW.

A friend of mine, who is a peace activist, and was a congressional candidate in 2004, found out that he's still under surveillance.
