Democratic Flier Idea: "PRO-LIFERS NEXT TARGET: YOUR GUNS"
Edited on Wed Mar-08-06 01:42 PM by berni_mccoy
Maybe it should go something like this:

You see, once the anti-choicers are done taking away the reproductive rights of women because they think it will save the lives of thousands of unborn children, they are going to move onto the next biggest life-taker: guns. That's right, guns. That's because guns are the result of at least 30,000 deaths in America a year. That's ten times the number of people who died in 9/11 and more than ten times the number of soldiers who've died in Iraq. That's a lot of life to save. I can see it now: picketers outside gun stores and gun shows with graphic photos of shotgun victims, most likely children.

But you say, "Guns are protected by the second amendment." And you'd be right. But reproductive rights were protected by the fourth amendment as well. All it's going to take is some loonie right-wing pro-life nut-cases in a state of like-minded individuals to kick-off the campaign for a complete ban on guns. They have the money to do it and they have the political capital to boot. And once Roe-v-Wade is overturned, they will have the legal precedent to do it as well.

So, if you want to keep your gun rights, start getting busy by speaking out against these crazy nut-cases that would rip apart the very U.S. Constitution that protects your right to keep and bear arms. To protect your rights, your going to have to protect the Constitutional rights of women. Fancy that.

We have to hit them in an area where they are strong and yet very weak...

We are going to have to do it....the Democratic party can't put anything together!!!

2. Dude, Republicans are not capable of cognitive dissonance
They are perfectly capable of simultaneously holding two opposing ideas in their nearly empty heads.

They are Pro-Life® and Pro Execution™.

3. Huh?
"You see, once the anti-choicers are done taking away the reproductive rights of women because they think it will save the lives of thousands of unborn children, they are going to move onto the next biggest life-taker: guns."

No they aren't? They're gun nuts too.

4. No. Many of these same people
support gun rights, whatever you want to call them.

Just as pro-choice doesn't mean pro-abortion, very few who favor gun control think that all guns should be taken away from all citizens.

Myself, I don't own a gun, don't want one, and think there should be certain restrictions on purchase and ownership (mandatory safety training seems like a good idea).

To put forth the idea that the pro-life people are going to come and take guns away simply makes you look nutty.

7. I'm pro-choice and pro-gun and there are many like me
the NRA is full of people who are both pro-choice and pro-gun or at least don't care about the abortion issue but do care about the gun issue. There are far more many people like that than who are pro-life AND pro-gun.

15. "the NRA is full of people"...LOL!
In fact, the NRA gives its money to anti-choice candidates, and honors pieces of shit like Tom Delay and Dick Cheney at tis conventions.

And there's no NRA members or gun owners who say boo about it publicly.

18. The NRA gives it's money to anyone who pledges gun rights...
The repubs have chosen two opposing groups to undermine democratic efforts. Yes, they have pro-life and pro-death groups... That's the democratic dilema... the repubs have framed both sides of the issue so a democrat can't even speak about them.

Most people are not pro-abortion or to put it the other way, anti-life.
Most people are for Constitutional rights, and so the republican framing of the gun argument based on the constitution makes sense.

The repubs have mastered trapping the dems between these two issues for DECADES.

NOW we have a chance to do the same. I'm surprised more people here don't see this.

19. The NRA is an arm of the Republican party
"That's the democratic dilema... the repubs have framed both sides of the issue so a democrat can't even speak about them."
How is it a dilemna of any sort? The overwhelming majority of Americans support gun control AND reproductive rights...and the same sour clot of right wing loonies opposes both.

"NOW we have a chance to do the same"
The same what? You mean we should spread lies and hysteria to ill-informed dimwits?

13. In fact, the gun rights loonies are almost all anti-choice
Take a look at the wowsers in the Congressional Second Amendment Caucus....Marilyn Musgrave, Virgil Goode, etc.

5. Won't work
Moreover, it probably would backfire. The fourth amendment doesn't speficially state abortion as a protected right, the courts found it under an implied right to privacy. The second amendment, even though the original interpretation was vastly different from today's, is very clear and simple. Pro-lifers and pro-gun folk are the same people most of the time anyways.

8. The right-to-bear arms has been deemed NOT an absolute right
by the same supreme court who decided abortion was a matter of right to privacy.

I doubt it would backfire. Backfire to what? Democrats have lost everything as it is. It's time to go on the offensive and at least fight on a fair playing field: use the same tactics the repubs do to get people angry at the other side.

6. You might want to check your facts before making such a claim
According to the CDC, 47,603 people died from transportation-related injuries in 2003.

Of the 30,136 firearm-related deaths, 16,907 were suicides.

Roll your own query at http://www.cdc.gov/ncipc/wisqars/

"Unintentional injury" (all causes including firearm accidents, which are actually rare) ranks 6th among the leading causes of death.

Homicide (about 2/3 of which are from gunshot) ranks 14th, just after Necrotizing Enterocolitis :scared: .

9. No one is going to regulate transportation any more than it is
And besides, pro-lifers are against suicide, so it's not hard to project that they won't distinguish between suicide-related shooting, accidental or homicide: it's all loss of life and they are willing to limit someone's choice to prevent it.

Anti-choice? They only care about controlling women mostly. I'm sure some of them may care about the UNborn but NONE of them care about the born.
