Israel will have to act on Iran if UN can't
Wed Mar 8, 2006 9:28 AM ET

By Louis Charbonneau

BERLIN (Reuters) - If the U.N. Security Council is incapable of taking action to stop Iran from acquiring nuclear weapons, Israel will have no choice but to defend itself, Israel's defense minister said on Wednesday.

Defense Minister Shaul Mofaz was asked whether Israel was ready to use military action if the Security Council proved unable to act against what Israel and the West believe is a covert Iranian nuclear weapons program.

"My answer to this question is that the state of Israel has the right give all the security that is needed to the people in Israel. We have to defend ourselves," Mofaz told Reuters after a meeting with his German counterpart Franz Josef Jung.

Iran denies wanting nuclear weapons and says it is only interested in the peaceful generation of electricity. It has also threatened to retaliate if Israel or the United States were to bomb any of its nuclear facilities.

14. Iran should demand that Israeli open up its nuclear program to inspections
as well. If Israel does, so should Iran. If not. No deal. Israel has actually attacked more of its neighbors than any other ME country. They bombed Iraq, Syria and Lebanon and now are threatening Iran.

2. defend itself?... Has Israel been attacked????
So you mean a pre-emptive attack on a nation which has done nothing to it....An attack based on words.

Why not try a little diplomacy first!... you fucking neocons!

4. So....This Is How It Will All Begin....
Israel will start, and the U.S. will join in. Primarily an air war, but since we're in Iraq, perhaps we'll sacrifice some ground troops for this as well.

I predict sometime in 2006. September perhaps?

7. I'm sorry, but why do they "have" to act?
Why don't they start a dialogue and why doesn't the US act more even-handedly in this region and A LOT of problems would be solved, non-violently.

8. Doh,
I did not realize this was here, I started a thread on this in LBN

http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=show_mesg&forum=102&topic_id=2152857&mesg_id=2152857

I can't believe no one has nominated this yet.

To me this is huge news - especially when you look at the language being used.

We have seen a steady ratcheting up of the rhetoric in the last few days, weeks and months on this subject.

This is not a good situation.

9. And Israel becomes the wild card
I guarantee you, Iran will consider any attack from any party as a direct attack by BOTH the United States and Israel and WILL retaliate.

Here is teh form the reatliation will take:

1) Bombing of military targets in Iraq.

2) Surface to Surface missile attacks against ships in the Persian Gulf.

3) Ballistic missile attacks against Israel.

4) Attacks against any U.S. interests in Qatar, UAE, and Kuwait.

5) Ground invasion of Iraq (they've been itching to do this).

6) Guerilla insurgency in Shia regions of Iraq.

Any attack against Iran could result in the deaths of as many as 30,000 American troops in the region within a couple of weeks.

13. You forgot one important Target...
You see the * cabal is under the false notion that bombs and foreign boots will never touch US soil....

An attack against Iran could bring Russia into this mess....and other countries supporting Iran....
our troops will be slaughtered....

Any way you look at it it's not going to be good...

When this happens expect the "Draft"...the US does not have enough boots....

19. I think they'll also use terrorist attacks on Western
civilian sites, too.

Rest assured that al-Qaeda (et. al.) will help Iran. Iranians may be Persian, but they're still of the Muslim faith, by and large, and al-Qaeda's stated goal is to protect Islam (not, as the Bush Cabal would have us believe, because "they hate our freedoms. It's what we do, not who we are).

20. Protect us from the Palestinians?
:wtf:

The Israeli government commissions a huge American military base to protect them from rock-throwing 10-year-olds and, at the worse, a handful of suicide bombers? Oh, brother. :eyes:

(DISCLAIMER: My ex is Muslim, my new husband is Jewish. There is NOT an anti-Semitic point to my statement. It's about the Israeli government, not anyone's faith.)

The smart money is on Israel bombing their facilities while we stand off to the side and say, "What are you looking at? We didn't do it!"

After 50+ years of hand-holding with the most rightist factions of the Israeli goverment, do the stupid neocons in control of our government honestly think that Muslims, worldwide, won't blame the United States along with Israel?

Oh, come on!

18. By the logic used, Iran has a good reason to make a pre-emptory strike.
Israel, France, and, of course, America, have all threatened the use of force against Iran. Iran, on the other hand, has made no such threats, but has said it would retaliate IF attacked.

So, who poses the greater threat?
