Beware the SD abortion vote...
And remember what happened before the last election? Remember how some judges in Massachusetts made a startling ruling on gay marriage? The same card is in play this time, it seems to me. From Massachusetts, the Repubs took the issue and put it on the ballot in about 12 other states. Repubs carried every state.

It is my opinion that this is the start of a similar campaign, except this time it will be the old tried and true issue of abortion. From SD, they will move south to MS, KY, TN, IN, and others. But their plan is the same.

2. I hadn't even thought of that.... you are so right
This will become ballot incentives for the fundies to get their base out at an election where we are counting on low voter turnout on the puke side.

3. by doing this they turn the Dems what they want them to be
Democrats running in places like MS,KY, TN, IN are very careful with the approach they take on abortion...... by making this a major point they can go back to the old "flip flopping" routine where the dems look like they are pandering to all.

4. on the other hand abortion is not the same as same sex marriage
in the sense that there are women out there who don't practice what they preach (curse everyone to hell until they have an unwanted pregnancy). It could be the thing to sink the dems, but who knows.... it could backfire on the republicans if they take it too far.

6. what on earth would do the same thing on the Dem side?
honestly, I'm trying to think if there is anything that (if it ended up on a ballot) would light the same sort of spark under the democrats asses.

7. The first thing that must be done is...
to expose their plan, so people will know ahead of time what they are voting for and how they are being manipulated again. Truth is our most valuable ally. We cannot find another shady issue that will counter theirs. We can only educate the people.

9. I saw this coming weeks ago...
I'm surprised it's taken others this long to see it. Of course they would do it this year. They hope it will get challenged and go to the supreme court, in the meantime the issue will come up in tight elections in which candidates will be asked what they think of the ruling and the fundies will come out in droves to support the pro-life candidate. It's so easy to see yet it will probably work.

10. Oh... I don't think we should find a shady issue
I mean find a real (and important issue). I think it is very important the the dems recognize this plan (of the repukes), but I also think that we shouldn't let the debate take over so much that the religious base is all excited (they have been feeling pretty deflated these days..... this will give them some adrenaline) and the dems come off as wavering flip floppers (just like gay marriage).Truth is our most valuable ally, but it would be nice if the democrats campaigned with truth on their side--this might help inject a base of people who stayed at home last time to vote--not having a clear position doesn't garner much passion from voters. Dems have to win by losing some voters. Forget the religious right or the fickle swing voter, rally the troops (we have the numbers to beat them if we make them come to the polls)

11. Fair enough...
If the Repubs wish to pull out the abortion issue, I would suggest that the Democrats pull out the jobs, immigration, and outsourcing national security issues as a counter. :)

16. I guess I meant that I was wondering if there is an issue that is
Edited on Wed Mar-08-06 12:12 PM by julialnyc
a democratic issue that would drive people to the polls who would otherwise stay home.

Now I would most certainly go to the polls for jobs, immigration, outsourcing, national security, ect.... but when I try to inject some passion into friends of mine who are too lazy to get involved these are not the issues that get them to pay attention to me (I obviously am even less successful than our politicians on delivering the information in a way that motivates them).

Sadly, with abortion too many take it for granted and don't think it has the possibility of being overturned. I'm just wondering of there is one issue that WE could put front in center where the republicans are too sensitive to answer the way they want. Democrats are too scared to be fully pro-choice and proud. They say I'm pro-choice, but then make a million excuses (like my religion doesn't make me personally agree with it, ect..) rather than take a stand by talking about what happens with the alternative (back ally abortions, Lacie Peterson's, ect..).

I always hear the point made that republicans know how to win because they know that you have to realize that you won't appeal to everyone, so don't be apologetic for taking a stand on a issue (this and diabold, smear campaigns, and lies) while democrats try to please everyone and are to dictated by polls.I want an issue that puts the republicans out of their unified message (where red state republicans will have to have a different approach that blue... or even purple state republicans). Is there such an issue?

By the way, great thread :)

23. Pro-choicers also have more support than gay marriage
IAt least if you believe that Survey USA 50-state polls. Only about 10 states are so have pro-life majorities, and even there it's almost 50-50.

28. but 10 states could be huge
if the fundies come out.

I don't know which states we are talking about, but we have states such as TN,MS, and FL which all have senate elections in 06 (not to mention all of the congressional seats).

I agree with you that it is different in the sense that more people are pro-choice, but it still scares me.

32. FL is pro-choice
Especially when you consider many of the Snowbird Yankees coming from the Northeast and Midwest. Not all of them are pro-choice, of course, but when many people come from liberal regions, they often bring their politics with them.

13. Republicans will never outlaw abortion
Republicans will never outlaw abortion because they make too much money from the antichoice suckers.

The Democrats need to call them on their bluff and tell the Republicans to go ahead and ban abortion.

They have the House, they have Senate, they have the swing-vote on the bench so why don't they just go ahead and ban it?

It's time the anti-choice suckers have it pointed out to them that the Republicans will never ban abortion because it's too much of a cash cow for them.

15. It's time to stop being scared of Bullies.
Bush calls Anti-choice demonstrators at their rallies and cheers the suckers on.

We need to call the Republicans on this. They don't care about banning abortion. The rich will always have a choice. It's our poor sisters and daughters who will die if these wackos get their way. That is why we must throw down the gauntlet and tell these hateful bastards to go ahead and make abortion illegal now. Do it now, so moderates and independents can finally see the republicans for the fakes that they are and we can take back the Congress in 2006.

Flag Burning, Abortion, Gay Rights....Every election year they pull out the "moral" debates to cover up the bullshit we had to put up with when they were in office.

Sadly alot of people fall for it.

21. Could our issue be stem cells?
I think we are in a huge majority out there and many people can relate to being sick (or having loved ones that could be helped). With the amazing advances science has already made (did anyone see 60 minutes where a paralyzed mouse could walk again) it will be hard for the republicans to stand in unity against it.

The whole theory behind 06' looking good for dems is that republicans will stay home (not that they will vote dem), this is one thing that brings them out.

34. The Pukes are trying to force red-state dems into a rock and a hard place.
Red state dems will either have to vote no on an abortion ban, and get slammed by republican canidates, or vote yes on the abortion ban and gett slammed as DINOs by purist Dems. The Pukes do this all fucking time in socially conservative parts of the country.
