In fact many families in Iraq have sunnis and shiites intermarried throughout.

8. Iraq has never had a proper civil war.
Just as my wife is a Catholic and I'm a protestant, Iraqi tribes have both Sunni and Shia in the families. The divisions between the faiths have been largely accepted, but just like the Republicans are trying to marginalize Democrats and liberals, some of the more unscrupulous are playing on these differences now. This is why there is so much suspicion being placed upon the Interior Ministry - they seem to be responsible for most of the killings.

Iraq has never actually had a civil war over religion. The differences which brought Saddam Hussein to power weren't religious, but political (e.g. Socialist vs Capitalist).
