Merging of the 'christian' Right and the DHS, it's happening people
"Executive Order: Responsibilities of the Department of Homeland Security with Respect to Faith-Based and Community Initiatives

By the authority vested in me as President by the Constitution and the laws of the United States of America, and in order to help the Federal Government coordinate a national effort to expand opportunities for faith-based and other community organizations and to strengthen their capacity to better meet America's social and community needs, it is hereby ordered as follows:

Section 1. Establishment of a Center for Faith-Based and Community Initiatives at the Department of Homeland Security.

(a) The Secretary of Homeland Security (Secretary) shall establish within the Department of Homeland Security (Department) a Center for Faith-Based and Community Initiatives (Center).

...

Sec. 2. Purpose of Center. The purpose of the Center shall be to coordinate agency efforts to eliminate regulatory, contracting, and other programmatic obstacles to the participation of faith-based and other community organizations in the provision of social and community services."

Bush is putting Faith based groups within the DHS.

He may as well give Pat Robertson and James Dobson high level positions in the Department.

31. Wasn't it him that said "Render unto Ceasar...."? But hey, just cause
someone calls themself a CHRISTian, doesn't mean they actually ahve to listen to the guy. Simply calling themselves that allows them access to a complete social circle, funding for their projects and cover for whatever rules they want to make up to control the rest of us who might be having more fun at something.

12. It's an executive order. Congress can't veto it. There are
other things they COULD do about it but they seem to be incapable of challenging the admin on even the smallest points let alone big ones like this.

I'm tired of hearing about all the things that they CAN'T do as the MINORITY party.
I want to hear about what they CAN do as a true OPPOSITION party.

24. The good part (for them) is,
under the veil of religion they can push any plan while keeping the people ignorant about what the plan is. I'm pretty sure they have studied history, that's how they know it works like that. The question is if they'll get away with it this time.

13. I believe I have officially reached outrage overload. It is
just a matter of time now I think. THIS country will be headed for civil war. The water in the pot just got warmer, soon it will boil. Either all hell will break loose, or we will go quietly into the night.

"I told you so" just isn't satisfying anymore.

Can't save New Orleans, but by golly, there will be Christianity in this country...or else.

Fuck me.

14. It's just the ERW's version of affirmative action for religious groups
Edited on Wed Mar-08-06 09:19 AM by leveymg
This EO is NOT saying that DHS is going to turn law enforcement functions over to Fundamentalists. But, if DHS is offering public contracts for social services (day care, community release programs, disaster relief), etc., the agency is now supposed to offer them bids. It's not even clear that this gives these groups any kind of preference.

We may not like giving churches public money, but this isn't the sort of stuff one would associate with Nazi Germany or Saudi Arabia. This isn't creating an American Religious Police.

16. An interesting thought
Let us not forget that Sensenbrenner's REAL ID Act gives DHS total control and power, with no oversite allowed from Congress or the judiciary, in the case of a national emergency.

Along with the Iran war drum, renewal of the USA PATRIOT Act, the consolidation of power in DHS, along with a thousand other things, big and small.

Edited on Wed Mar-08-06 09:43 AM by Bridget Burke
Which pesky "regulations" are going to be removed? Does the DHS really have the resources to create a special Center to make things easier for the faith-based? Somehow, I'd gotten the impression that DHS (& FEMA) were overwhelmed.

Religious groups have done work for the public good for--oh, a couple of centuries..

But they have done it without government funding & without government control.

as the insanity increases and with this latest development, I'm reminded of Ivan the Terrible.

Edited on Wed Mar-08-06 10:15 AM by Nothing Without Hope
The Wash Post story is virtually the only coverage except for a brief AP story that basically repeats the WH press release. The press release is in the opening post of the first of the two DU threads cited below, and the Wash Post aricle is linked to in Reply #40 in the same thread. it's a sorry page 20 piece setting this up as a reasonable response for Katrina victims - when it is actually destruction of the separation of church and state by imperial fiat, so far unopposed except by us.
