Good News; Bad News, from Conyers' Blog:

Good News; Bad News
Impeachment Gains Traction; Patriot Passes in the House

First the good news. C-span is showing the Harper's Magazine Forum on Impeachment in New York I discussed a few days ago. You can see an archived version by clicking here, and going to C-span 2, for 7:45 AM. I can tell you that a lot of folks have already seen it, and I received a number of calls and commendations regarding the forum already. On a related note, I see that Newfane, Vermont has passed a resolution calling for impeachment as well. This shows that there is real interest in the grass roots for accountability. Kudos to Newfane.

Now the bad news. Today the House approved, by only 2 votes, the so-called Patriot Act "fixes" approved by the Senate last week. This was a controversial bill, and should never have been on the House suspension calendar. The fixes were either largely cosmetic or downright negative, from a civil liberties point of view. We fought this abuse of power every step of the way and I controlled time on the Democratic side today. I am proud of the way the many, many opponents spoke out and spoke up today -- I just wish we had three more votes. I can assure you, civil rights and liberties is an issue that will not go away, even with today's defeat.

2. These close votes are contrived
because certain Republicans are allowed to vote against in the interest of upcoming elections. Its a managed vote.

3. Such bullshit, isn't it. Why does anyone bother? I'm not
a pessimist, but I can get discouraged.
