3rd Anniversary of Iraq War

A Call for a Week of Local Action: March 15-22, 2006

March 19th will mark the third anniversary of a war that never should have happened
-- a war based on lies that continues to devastate the lives of thousands,
both in Iraq and the United States.

United for Peace and Justice joins our partners in the global antiwar movement
in callingfor a massive outpouring of opposition to the war in Iraq.
We are urging opponents of the war to organize a wide array of events in their
hometowns for the entire week surrounding this anniversary.

Some highlights: On March 15, UFPJ will join MediaChannel to kick off the week
of peace and justice events with a National Day of Local Media Protest.
On March 16, youth and students all over the country will stand up against 3 years
of unnecessary war and its impact on their generation.
During the week leading up to the 19th, two important marches --
the Veterans and Survivors March for Peace and Justice from Mobile to New Orleans
and Peregrinacion por la Paz from Tijuana to San Francisco -- will be underway,
each dramatically demonstrating how the war in Iraq is destroying our communities at home.

Legislative Action: Keep the Pressure On

Take Action!

If your members of Congress haven't signed on to any legislation against the war,
you need to have a serious conversation with them.

1. Give them a call: Call Congress at 202-224-3121.
2. Pay them a visit: Members of Congress are not in Washington all the time;
call your Representative and Senators' local office to find out when they are home,
and when you can meet with them.
3. Join our campaign to keep the pressure on Congress -- receive updates,
legislative alerts and invitations to particpate in monthly conference calls and briefings.

Amnesty Report on 14,000 Finds Prisoner Abuse Continues in Iraq

By ALAN COWELL
Published: March 7, 2006

LONDON, March 6 —
Amnesty International accused the United States and its allies on Monday
of committing widespread abuses in Iraq, including torture and the continued
detention of thousands of prisoners without charge or trial.

Related Text: Report on Torture in Iraq (amnesty.org)

The accusations could fuel the debate over the treatment of detainees that
flared after the publication of graphic photographs showing prisoners at
Abu Ghraib prison in Baghdad being mistreated by American guards.
More recently, British forces in Iraq have been criticized after videotapes
showed British soldiers beating Iraqi youths after demonstrations in southern Iraq.

In its report, "Beyond Abu Ghraib: Detention and Torture in Iraq," Amnesty
International also said the level of abuse by Iraqi forces since the transfer
of power in June 2004 was increasing.
The United States and its allies, the report said, have "established procedures
which deprive detainees of human rights guaranteed in international law and standards."

"The record of these forces, including U.S. forces and their United Kingdom allies,
is an unpalatable one," it said.
In particular, coalition forces deny "detainees their right to challenge the lawfulness
of their detention before a court."

Hassiba Hadj-Sahraoui, the deputy director of the group's Middle East
and North Africa program, described the way prisoners are detained as "arbitrary and a
recipe for possible abuse."

At the end of November 2005, the report said, quoting coalition figures,
more than 14,000 prisoners were held in Iraq:
about 4,850 in Baghdad, 7,365 at Camp Bucca (near Basra, in southern Iraq),
and more than 1,100 in the north, at Sulaimaniya.

2. Also include number of persons
killed in terrorists attacks on our home soil. I'm kinda split between this war. On one hand, I'm against it for the US always having its nose in foreign affairs. On the other, IF the ones we are at war with (Radical Muslims) are responsible for 9/11, which i think most people have now forgotten and forgiven, then we should be trying to dismantle their regime. Any other time, I would say "let them be", but when they bring their crap onto American soil, then we need to take action. Remember WWII. We can all take lessons from that. They are currently reaking havoc on Europe and the middle east, trying to expand. When they get their numbers up, I dont have a doubt that they will declare war against us. BUT.... The US Government did empower those guys back in the day.... So how do we fix all of this??? Damned if I know. I surely dont have all the answers. I'd like to hear what solutions you all come up with to help me figure this thing out. Peace is what I want, but it usually comes at the expense of nasty things like war.

Help me!!!!!

6. 1) Iraq DOES NOT = 9/11; and 2) Let's include deaths/injuries of Iraqis.
Edited on Tue Mar-07-06 12:41 PM by Just Me
The nation of Iraq was NOT responsible for 9/11. You have a LOT of homework to do to get up to speed.

Also, have you asked yourself WHY 9/11 happened? If not, pick up a copy of "Confessions of an Economic Hitman" and you may discover answers you never thought imaginable. Blowback is a bitch especially if it's the result of activities done in your name without your knowledge, let alone your approval.

15. Hmmm....
Freeper or not? Not sure.

If not, well enjoy your stay, and a warm DU welcome if you've not had one already.

If a freeper *sigh* oh well. Cést Lá Vie, as the old expression goes.

(Actually, it may only be famous in Aust. If you don't recognise, replace with "Que Séra séra" whatever that means.)
