Abortion could be banned in Missouri too
SB 1248 - This act provides that no person shall knowingly administer to, prescribe to, prescribe for, procure for, or sell to any pregnant women any medicine, drug, or other substance with the specific intent of causing or abetting the termination of the life of an unborn child. No person shall knowingly use or employ any instrument or procedure upon a pregnant woman with the specific intent of causing or abetting the termination of the life of an unborn child.

This act also provides that nothing shall be construed to prohibit the sale, use, prescription, or administration of a contraceptive measure, drug or chemical, if it is administered prior to the time when a pregnancy could be determined through conventional medical testing and if the contraceptive measure is sold, used, prescribed, or administered in accordance with manufacturer instructions.

Also, no licensed physician who performs a medical procedure designed or intended to prevent the death of a pregnant mother is guilty of violating this act. However, the physician shall make reasonable medical efforts under the circumstances to preserve both the life of the mother and the life of her unborn child in a manner consistent with conventional medical practice.

Nothing in this act shall be construed to subject the pregnant mother upon whom any abortion is performed or attempted to any criminal conviction and penalty.

This act also repeals numerous provisions in Chapter 188, RSMo, that regulate abortion.

This act contains a referendum clause.

1. All the fundie states are racing to see whose bill will get to SCOTUS 1st
It is an all out dead heat to get their version of the ban through the courts to the highest court in the land where bu$h's appointees can tip the balance just as planed.

5. The legislator who proposed this is a real gem
He is from Cape Girardeau - Rush Limbaugh's home town. Two years ago, during a debate over the education budget in the legislature, every time the Democrats made a point he disagreed with, he made siren sounds and fart noises into the microphone to disrupt the debate. Now this master of mature behavior wants to ban abortion - go figure.

24. He's an ass
I emailed him after I heard about his disruption and told him I teach special ed in MO and my students behave more appropriately in public than he does. I also told him I was old enough to be his mother and I was sure she was ashamed of his immature behavior.

7. I'm going to wager that it will be Mississippi.
Why? Because we have very strong women's advocacy groups that won't hesitate to challenge the new law.

Yes, believe it. There are women in Mississippi who won't allow this new law to stand. The Women's Coalition and pro-choice groups here will challenge it.

A free ticket to heaven? Forgiveness for all their many sins?

Or is it just a suitcase full of unamrked bills?

I suspect the latter.

32. They are turning Branson into a corporate fed fundie nest
http://www.news-leader.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20060304/LIFE/603040301/1004

snip

"We are seeing miracles," Hill said. "People are accepting Jesus Christ and people are being healed in the theaters in Branson."

snip

HARVESTING SOULS

Hill came to Branson from California, where he had a thriving business, was building a new home and saw himself as an evangelist in a community where exciting things were happening.

In the Ozarks hills he not only found a place that welcomed Christianity, but he was sure God had sent him there to work. He was convinced that he was headed to the right place when relationship expert and author Gary Smalley, now a good friend, told him the story of a prophecy by Corrie ten Boom, author of "The Hiding Place." The Dutch woman had a vision of angels as she was flying over Branson and declared that it was going to be a place that would be blessed by God.

For Hill, that prophecy has come to fruition. "This has been an incredible harvest ministry for souls," he said.

.........

Yeah, whatever. The environment was raped for the tourist trade. Sucking people in with the flag-waving, God-fearin' corn pone. It feeds the fundie mindset.

Harvesting souls? Why does that phrase make Corrie's "angels" feel more like Swamp Rat's lizard tribe?

19. I think they can play with this part:
This act also provides that nothing shall be construed to prohibit the sale, use, prescription, or administration of a contraceptive measure, drug or chemical, if it is administered prior to the time when a pregnancy could be determined through conventional medical testing and if the contraceptive measure is sold, used, prescribed, or administered in accordance with manufacturer instructions.

Now how soon can a pregnancy be determined "through conventional medical testing"?? What if a pregnancy test is developed that can determine pregnancy almost immediately? I don't think that is too far off.

But I posted this on the Missouri forum here a couple days ago and it is getting little to no action. I belong to a ton of political groups I get email from and NONE have included this in their nearly daily emails.

I am at a :wtf: stage with this. I don't understand why there is no outrage.

11. This rush to power of the far religious right
will back fire. Sadly, it won't do so in the short term - and many people will suffer in the duration. However, most folks may not like the 'idea' of abortion - but they really do not a version of the Hand Maiden's tail hoisted upon their daughters and sons.

25. I am pretty darn cetain of it.. but in a 'historical era' sense
it will completely change the discussion/debate/public sentiment... but sadly it may take quite some time (think "eras") to come to full revolt. Just as it took two decades to move public sentiment to supporting more extreme bans per abortions (in the late 80s being hardline on abortion was a HUGE political risk) - the extremism being demonstrated in these state-house bills/laws - will have a long lasting effect and reaction.

Another reaction will be the seriousness with which folks take the whole "who will the pres. candidate put on the court" concerns... the speed with which state houses have acted after Alito was confirmed is breathtaking - and not "unnoticeable" to the public. There are many in DC (strategists) who were 'certain' that this wouldn't happen (due to likely future political backlash) who are currently choking and losing sleep - and these folks, too, are awakening and likely to advice very differently in the future. I really do believe that we have just entered a very historical political period.

30. I feel very "certain" - however
there may be quite a lag time before the backlash and changes follow - which means that there is a danger that there will be a period of time before a change - and some tragic results during that time.

There was also a great movie done with Robert Duvall, Faye Dunaway, Aidan Quinn, Elizabeth Mcgovern & Natasha Richardson....a good intro for those who don't have time to read it...

And yes, the USA is headed towards becoming the Republic of Gilead...the Christo-fascist Corporatcracy has begun....

37. DIY abortions are not so difficult

There will be webpages set up where the $3 abortion is made a little safer.

Right now there are thousands of poor Americans who take an ulcer drug to induce 1st trimester labor. If abortion is made illegal, offsite webpages will be established so pregnant women can calculate the correct dosage and learn what signs to look for if things are going wrong and they should call 911.

I am not saying this is a good thing. I'm just saying it's not quite as horrible as the abortions of the '50's.
