You guys need to relax - the Abortion bans are illegal.
They will be found illegal in all lower courts because all lower courts are bound by Roe v Wade, and the Supreme will uphold Roe v Wade when the case(s) finally get there.

Chill out, folks.

3. ... and you're basing your conclusion on what, exactly ?
 The whole point of these fundie pieces of legislature at the state level are to challenge Roe all the way up thru appeals courts and to the SCOTUS who, given the 2 new additions, may very well reinterpret 'right to privacy' to exclude abortion.

Jus' sayin ...

4. And what other atrocities shall we sit silently for
while waiting for somebody to do something about them?

Somebody is US.

Democracy is NOT a spectator sport. And the courts are being stacked.

Chill out my ass. We are talking the health and welfare of our daughters here. I CHOOSE not to wait around and hope some judges will be reasonable. I CHOOSE to exercise some serious free speech.

I CHOOSE choice.

5. Fine, you have a choice:
Edited on Sat Mar-04-06 02:02 PM by rpgamerd00d
1) Worry and exercise free speech in futility, since neither affects the SCOTUS decision.
2) Chill out and wait for the SCOTUS decision.

You are in full control of your own life. You can raise your blood pressure worrying about something you cannot possibly change, or... not.

Up to you.

8. Anyone who thinks we should "chill out" about ANYTHING
should remember the reason behind the founding of DU.

And anyone who thinks we should chill out should question why they're a member.

13. Yep! What beam me up scottie said!

When we give up our voice, we give up our nation.

Not me. Not a lot of us. That is why we are here, well most of us.

11. By raising our voices, we put some balance into the public dialog
which is necessary if we want to restore this nation to the representative democracy it was intended to be. By sitting on our thumbs and waiting in silence, we let the forces of coercion and control have all the say. In case you haven't noticed, they are getting much more attention and tribute paid them than their actual numbers warrant. That has already gone on far too long on way too many important issues. The nation is in bad shape because of our patient waiting for common sense and balance to be restored. WE are the nation.

Am curious as to just why you would advocate that Americans not use their voices and let their representatives know what they want. Am very curious indeed.

12. You're far from alone.
Only people who have nothing to lose "chill out" when rights and freedoms are threatened.

Those of us that care about the rights of EVERYONE don't ever take a break.

anyway. So I think a little fear is in order.

10. I used to think that the Reps needed and wanted abortion to be legal.
I mean the leaders of the party -- mainly because if abortion disappears as an issue, what can they run on?

And because I thought this, I was sure Bush was going to nominate someone whose record on abortion was fuzzy, or even pro-choice... someone like Gonzales.

But with the nomination of Alito, I think that's changing. The Republicans clearly think they don't need abortion as an issue anymore.

14. I think gender has a lot to do with how vehement anyone is.
There are exceptions to this, but I seriously think that women and parents of female children tend to be a bit more passionate in support of Choice. I can't be pragmatic, this is MY body and my DAUGHTER's body they want to control.

Unwanted pregnancies happen, and some women choose to end those pregnancies. THAT is a human fact.

Another fact is that when access to legal abortion is restricted women DIE.

Nero was "chilling out" while Rome burned.

The world "chilled out" while the Nazi death camps operated.

I am not gonna "chill out" while I watch women's rights and women's LIVES taken.

15. Yes and we won't start wars based on lies.
Our election process will never be compromised.

Poor people can count on the government during a catastrophe.

GLBT people will never be victims of discrimination or treated like second class citizens.

Sick people will never have to worry about adequate health care.

Did I leave anything out?

Edited on Sat Mar-04-06 02:43 PM by RGBolen
I haven't heard anything about his health, and they do seem to be willing to stay on the job till the end now, but you never know. I would hate for him to chose to retire without waiting for the next President, and would certainly hate the other more.

18. DU is DU. If you want to change peoples minds, this isn't the place.
We all generally agree here.

And in any case, the case is the case. It will be filed in SD, get ruled on in SD, get appealed in SD, and end up in front of SCOTUS. Public opinion is great, but has no effect on this specific case. I am not saying that changing public opinion is bad. I'm just saying it will have no effect on this case. Therefore, I was just simply saying that people need to chill out about THIS CASE. Not about the issue in general.

This case is won. But we should still fight to change public opinion.

That's all Im saying.
