Probably. The Kurds would do it today if it were politically possible.

3. probably should have been originally.
takes a strongarm dictator to hold it together.

we should have divided it immediately into a loose confederation of 3 relatively independent states with a weak central government.
then we should have pressed for equal rights and treatment of all ethnicities in all states, ie a bill of rights.

instead we raped and pillaged our way to the current horror show.

10. Articles
We tried the same thing in America with the Articles of Confederation. It didn't work very well, and a weak central government rarely works. This would just let the 3 states build up their own armies, which would ultimately make a civil war even more possible then it is today.

6. Read the book, "Paris 1919". Talks about the arbitrary borders in the ME
Iraq is a pretend country created by the powers that be after WWI. The only thing holding that place together was a dictator...those groups HATE each other.

7. Iraq is a lot like the old Yugoslavia, a country in name only
Edited on Thu Mar-02-06 12:26 PM by DinahMoeHum
with the various factions held together only by a strong-arm monarch or a strong-arm politician like Tito or Saddam.

Once Tito left the scene, the various factions splintered and formed their own countries, ie. Bosnia, Serbia, Croatia, Montenegro, etc.

Methinks it will be the same with Iraq, into 3 countries:
1) predominantly Sunni
2) predominantly Shiite
3) predominantly Kurd

:smoke:
