1. how much did they pay him?
That would be my first question, followed by, "Why is Jimmy Carter supporting the ports deal?"

There may be more than meets the eye here.

17. I am not misquoting you
I am reflecting my opinion on the difference between the two courses of action

carter supporting the ports deal verses advising dubai

21. There is some ambiguity in the response. C'est l'internet. non?
Glad you weren't trying to put words in my mouth. I still think it is interesting that Jimmy Carter supports the Dubai deal and that Bill Clinton is consulting with the UAE. Makes the Thom Hartmann piece seem all the more correct.

2. If he was president I'd be concerned, what concerns me now is...
why is the media jumping on board reporting distractions, red herrings, and shiny keys on this issue when Bubba no longer represents the US any official capacity?

9. the media loves to Subterfuge and obfuscate
Edited on Thu Mar-02-06 11:41 AM by IsItJustMe
Look at the ball. Look at the ball. What hand is it in?

God forbid if we could just look at this issue for what it is.

Look at what the media did with Al Gore when he gave a speech in Saudi Arabia about how Arabs were treated in the US post 9/11.

What a joke. They seem to give more coverage on diversion issues than what is going on.

3. his explanation is good enough for me.

Mr Clinton’s spokesman said: “President Clinton is the former president of the US and as such receives many calls from world leaders and leading figures every week. About two weeks ago, the Dubai leaders called him and he suggested that they submit to the full and regular scrutiny process and that they should put maximum safeguards and security into any port proposal.”

He added that Mr Clinton supported his wife’s position on the deal and that “ideally” state-owned companies would not own US port operations.

Mr Clinton’s contact with Dubai on the issue underscores the relationship he has developed with the United Arab Emirates since leaving office. In 2002, he was paid $300,000 (€252,000) to address a summit in Dubai.

The backlash against Dubai’s takeover has seen some lawmakers in Washington highlight the UAE’s alleged role in helping to finance September 11.

4. Is it possible that the advice he is giving UAE
is how to get out of the deal and save face? It also statese that he supports his wife's positions in opposing control of the ports by foreign governments.

12. The UAE (e.g. Dubai, abu Dabai) are HUGE employers of consulting services
Edited on Thu Mar-02-06 11:42 AM by TahitiNut
Federal contractors in the U.S. have contracts with various UAE fiefdoms for consulting services. After all, when they sell petro for dollars, they have to spend those dollars on something. In just one area (Internet/network consulting) they've been spending hundreds of millions on their infrastructure over many years.

18. This isn't like James Baker, who is ACTIVELY representing the Saudis
in a lawsuit brought against them by the families affected by 9/11.

The UAE asked Clinton for an opinion, he gave them his opinion. Nothing else.

22. why should he not?
i actually think i agree w. his advice

tricky position to be in, since his wife opposes the deal and it is prob. good politics to oppose the deal but i'm not sure i necessarily oppose it myself

if dubai's economic success is dependent on usa's economic success, and we are entwined together economically, then we are not going to be attacking one another militarily, correct?

23. Clinton was wrong on lots of things.
NAFTA and other supposed "free trade" deals. He bought the GOPs issues so they would like him , I guess. (that worked real well) And this Dubai issue now belongs on that list of stupid issues he supported.

I have a portrait of the Big Dog on my wall here in my computer room. Im seriously debating on whether I should take it down and shitcan it.
